Trump responds as reporter asks ‘the best question’ he’s ‘ever been asked’
During a press conference at the White House, President Trump was questioned regarding recent remarks made by economist Torsten Sløk, who had changed his previous stance on Trump’s tariff policy. Sløk, who was once a prominent critic, now posits that Trump may have “outsmarted everyone” with his strategy. Following his inauguration, Trump enacted substantial tariffs on imports from key U.S. trading partners, including China, Mexico, and Canada.
In spite of extensive criticism and concerns about a potential recession, the U.S. economy has continued to perform robustly. On June 27, both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq reached all-time highs, leading to a reassessment of prior economic predictions. Sløk, who currently holds the position of chief economist at Apollo Global Management, recognized this change in his perspective in a recent blog entry.
When a journalist referenced Sløk’s shift in opinion and sought a reaction, Trump expressed enthusiasm. He described it as the best question he had ever received, highlighting the strong economy and low inflation rates. He stressed that the U.S. was accruing “billions and billions” from other nations as a result of the tariffs.
When pressed for a message to his detractors, Trump replied pointedly, suggesting they should “return to business school” since the advantages of the tariffs were evident. He reiterated that the U.S. had benefited financially without causing the economic downturn that many had anticipated.
