A 32-year-old woman, identified only as Mandy K, jumped into a polar bear enclosure at the Berlin Zoo while the bears were being fed on Friday. To reach the enclosure, she climbed over a fence, passed through a line of hedges, and scaled a wall.
Once inside the enclosure, the woman sustained serious injuries to her arms, legs, and back as one of the bears attacked her. Despite efforts by six zookeepers to distract the bears, one bear bit the victim repeatedly.
The zookeepers eventually managed to scare the bear away and rescue the woman. She was promptly taken to the hospital where she underwent surgery to treat her wounds.
It later emerged that the woman is a teacher who had been struggling with job search-related stress, which reportedly led to her drastic actions at the zoo.
