A housekeeper had just finished cleaning when Conor ran past an open window that had been left unlatched \u2014 and in a heartbreaking instant, he fell to his death.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-dea4c4b78ef2978fc456ce828e9ac46c\" class=\"newsner-dea4c4b78ef2978fc456ce828e9ac46c newsner-incide_content_once\">\n<div id=\"newsner-1506104826\" class=\"newsner-incide_content_once\">\n<div id=\"taboola-mid-article-thumbnails\" class=\"trc_related_container tbl-trecs-container trc_spotlight_widget\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe window had been left open. Eric was on his way to pick Conor up,\u201d Lory\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2000\/03\/20\/claptons-ex-breaks-silence-on-sons-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard the fax machine and checked it out before going to check on Conor. I walked in just a fraction of a minute too late. He had gone. Clapton, who was elsewhere in New York at the time, rushed to the scene as soon as he heard the news.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I told Eric what had happened, he froze solid. It was like he\u2019d just stopped functioning. He didn\u2019t say anything. It was all so unreal. When Conor died, the relationship between Eric and me died,\u201d Lory said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-purchased-circus-tickets\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Purchased circus tickets<\/h2>\n<p>At the time of the tragedy, Eric Clapton and Lory Del Santo weren\u2019t together. The rock star was looking ahead, eager to share more time with his son. He had promised him a trip to the Bronx Zoo the next day, followed by lunch at a nearby Italian restaurant. That morning, as Lory got ready and Conor played excitedly around the apartment, filled with the pure joy of a child, tragedy struck.<\/p>\n<p>But sadly, tragedy struck.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-stepped-away-from-the-public-eye\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stepped away from the public eye<\/h2>\n<p>Devastated by grief, Clapton stepped away from the public eye. In the painful days following Conor\u2019s death, Eric Clapton brought his son\u2019s body home from New York, accompanied by Conor\u2019s maternal family from Italy, to prepare for the funeral.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-space\" data-google-query-id=\"CML2pbOStYwDFfVmHgIdHTokDA\">\n<p>Conor was laid to rest in Clapton\u2019s hometown of Ripley, a small village in Surrey, England. Located about 25 miles southwest of London, Ripley is where Clapton grew up and has remained a deeply personal place for him.<\/p>\n<p>After the service, overwhelmed by grief, Clapton escaped to Antigua, renting a small cottage where he spent nearly a year in isolation. I went off to Antigua and I rented a little cottage there in a community and I just swatted mosquitos all day and played this guitar and stayed there for almost a whole year, without much contact with the outside world, and I tried to heal myself,\u201d he shared.<\/p>\n<p>During that time, music became his refuge. He played and rewrote songs over and over, searching for some kind of emotional release. \u201cAll I could do was play and write these songs and I re-wrote and re-performed them again and again and again and again until I felt like I had made some sort of move towards the surface of my being and then I was able to come out,\u201d Clapton recalled.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-a-letter-from-conor\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A letter from Conor<\/h2>\n<p>Eventually, he channeled his sorrow into music, co-writing\u00a0<em>Tears in Heaven<\/em>\u00a0with Will Jennings. The song, originally written for a film soundtrack, became one of his most emotional and personal works \u2014 a way to process his loss and keep Conor\u2019s memory alive.<\/p>\n<p>Amid this devastating loss, Clapton also received something that shattered him all over again \u2014 a letter from Conor. Just days before the accident, the little boy had written his first-ever letter to his father, with help from his mother, Lory Del Santo. The note had been mailed to Clapton\u2019s London home and tragically arrived only after Conor\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-167254\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/03\/31181248\/GettyImages-815921504.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"655\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">PA\/PA Images via Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lory\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/hp\/front\/tragic-letter-eric-clapton-received-from-his-dead-son-7083317.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">remembered<\/a>\u00a0that heartbreaking moment vividly: \u201dThe baby had learned to write a few words and he said to me, \u2018Oh mummy, I want to write a letter to daddy, what shall I write?\u2019 I told him, \u2018Well, write, I love you.\u2019 He wrote that and we posted it like a regular letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dAfter Conor died, Eric and I arrived in London for the funeral. I was there when Eric received his mail just after the funeral and he opened it up and it was Conor\u2019s letter.
