Andrea was overjoyed.<\/p>\n<p>After just eleven weeks, however, the happiness turned to grief. Andrea miscarried.<\/p>\n<p><em>I was an absolute wreck. I didn\u2019t know what to do, who to talk to, what was appropriate to discuss, or who could help me. Little did I know that 1 in 4 women suffer the same and people just don\u2019t talk about it.\u00a0I didn\u2019t know if I could ever deal with being pregnant again.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After a while, Andrea\u2019s anxiety was lessened with the help of her supportive husband. Thankfully, she fell pregnant again.<\/p>\n<p>This time around, she promised she would do everything in her power to help her baby grow healthily. She gave up a number of foods, including cold-cut meats, sushi and certain cheeses. She also took to devouring books on pregnancy \u2013 this time, she determined, everything would be OK.<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, her term passed without complications. She began small contractions right on time, went into hospital and was admitted into a delivery room with her partner.<\/p>\n<p>She was about to be sent home, until an ultrasound showed she had little-to-no amniotic fluid left. They had to induce labor immediately.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-167262\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/10\/31190743\/IMG_3652_bruise_cmct2-900x1200-1.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/10\/31190743\/IMG_3652_bruise_cmct2-900x1200-1.jpg 900w, https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/10\/31190743\/IMG_3652_bruise_cmct2-900x1200-1-768x1024.jpg 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"1200\" \/><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"h-the-birth\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The birth<\/h3>\n<p>Fortunately, the birth went well. Before the end of the night, Andrea and her husband had welcomed a little boy into the world, Adam.<\/p>\n<p>Only, Andrea\u2019s partner never got to cut the umbilical cord as planned.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Adam was immediately rushed away from his parents in a confusing blur of medical staff. Andrea\u2019s husband was able to catch a glimpse of his son over the shoulder of a group of doctors. He turned back to Andrea and uttered the heartbreaking words:\u00a0<em>\u201cHoney, there\u2019s something wrong with Adam\u2019s leg.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Twenty people had gathered around little Adam. The longer time went on without answers, the concerned Andrea grew.<\/p>\n<p>When Andrea\u2019s mom and partner left to inform family members outside, she lay alone in the ward, not knowing what was happening. Still, no one told her what was wrong with her baby.<\/p>\n<p>It transpired that the right side of his stomach and his entire right leg were marbled purple and black.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-the-diagnosis\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The diagnosis<\/h3>\n<p>After a time, Adam was diagnosed with\u00a0Cutis Marmorata Telangiectatica Congenita\u00a0(CMTC), an extremely rare vascular malformation.<\/p>\n<p>Andrea and her husband didn\u2019t know how to react. At the time of their son\u2019s birth, there had been only 500 reported cases of the disease in the world \u2026 ever.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-167261\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/10\/31190747\/Skarmavbild-2025-03-31-kl.-21.07.01.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1540px) 100vw, 1540px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/10\/31190747\/Skarmavbild-2025-03-31-kl.-21.07.01.png 1540w, https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/10\/31190747\/Skarmavbild-2025-03-31-kl.-21.07.01-768x596.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/10\/31190747\/Skarmavbild-2025-03-31-kl.-21.07.01-1536x1193.png 1536w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1540\" height=\"1196\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Adam underwent a multitude of tests on his vital organs, which, fortunately, he passed without issue. Andrea spent so much time in the NICU that she didn\u2019t sleep for four days.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, Adam was able to go home, with a strict set of instructions on how to care for his skin. The more time that went by, however, the more it became apparent that Adam was a true fighter.<\/p>\n<p>Today, he\u2019s a happy, healthy young boy who loves math and playing chess. He\u2019s even been able to play sports, though his condition makes his leg weak.<\/p>\n<p>Through it all, despite the fact Adam knows he\u2019s slightly different from the other children, he\u2019s never seen his disability as an obstacle.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-167263\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/10\/31190819\/IMG_1962-450x600-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Andrea West continues to be actively involved in\u00a0CMTC Alliance, a global non-profit organization that empowers individuals diagnosed with rare vascular malformations.
