A more recent 2024 report\u00a0obtained by ABC News documented 1,287 LEO and correctional officer suicides between 2016 and 2022.<\/p>\n<p>More than half (51%) of these suicides involved officers from local police departments, while 20% came from sheriff\u2019s offices. Now, in just over a month, four more officers have tragically joined these statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what we know about their deaths and how HCSO is responding with mental health resources for its officers.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-hcso-deputy-christina-kohler-found-dead-after-being-reported-missing\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HCSO Deputy Christina Kohler Found Dead After Being Reported Missing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>On March 13, authorities issued a Houston Regional CLEAR Alert for 37-year-old HCSO deputy Christina Kohler, who had last been seen on March 12. Officials stated at the time that Kohler posed a \u201ccredible threat to her own health and safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after, it was confirmed that Kohler had died the same day she was reported missing. In a statement, Constable Mark Herman honored her memory, writing, \u201cHer name, her life, absolutely deserves to be remembered for her commitment to our profession.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-167091\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/03\/27194626\/Screenshot-2025-03-27-at-19.46.13.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"874\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Christina Kohler. Credit: Harris County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kohler had served with the HCSO since 2018 and was most recently assigned as a bailiff in the 182nd District Court, according to\u00a0The Houston Chronicle<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-former-hcso-deputy-maria-vasquez-dies-by-suicide\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Former HCSO Deputy Maria Vasquez Dies by Suicide<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Just days after Kohler\u2019s death, the Medical Examiner\u2019s Office confirmed that former HCSO Deputy Maria Vasquez had also died by suicide.<\/p>\n<p>Vasquez, 42, had left the department in December 2024. She was found at her home on Almeda Genoa Road in Houston.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-167092\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/03\/27194831\/Screenshot-2025-03-27-at-19.48.19.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"582\" height=\"872\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Maria Vasquez. Credit: Harris County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>HCSO\u2019s Community Engagement Division honored both Vasquez and Kohler in a Facebook post, writing: \u201cHeaven has gained two beautiful angels. May their memory be a blessing, inspiring strength and comfort to their friends, family, and coworkers during this challenging time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-two-additional-former-deputies-die-by-suicide\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Two Additional Former Deputies Die by Suicide<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Alongside Kohler and Vasquez, two more former HCSO deputies have died under similar circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0ABC 13 Eyewitness News, ex-HCSO deputy William Bozeman also took his own life in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, on February 26, the medical examiner confirmed that 58-year-old former deputy Long Nguyen had also died by suicide.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-experts-urge-first-responders-to-seek-mental-health-support\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Experts Urge First Responders to Seek Mental Health Support<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Dr. Ron Acierno, director of the Trauma and Resilience Center at UTHealth Houston, emphasized the need to break the stigma surrounding mental health treatment for law enforcement officers\u2014both active and retired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMuch like the veteran community and active-duty military, there\u2019s a belief that you should \u2018tough it out.\u2019 Some officers don\u2019t realize help is available, while others believe it won\u2019t work,\u201d Acierno told\u00a0Click2Houston<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>His center provides mental health support specifically for first responders, using action-based treatments to help them cope.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Thomas McNeese, director of HCSO\u2019s Behavioral Health Division, also acknowledged the emotional burden of the job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis profession takes a toll on people. Over time, it changes them,\u201d McNeese said, stressing the importance of seeking help. \u201cReaching out, getting support, and not staying stuck is really important.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-how-hcso-is-addressing-mental-health-in-the-wake-of-these-losses\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How HCSO Is Addressing Mental Health in the Wake of These Losses<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In response to these tragedies, HCSO\u2014the largest sheriff\u2019s office in Texas\u2014is offering mental health and peer support services to its deputies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sheriff\u2019s Office is grateful for the community\u2019s prayers and support, and we offer our deepest sympathies to Deputy Kohler\u2019s family,\u201d a spokesperson stated.<\/p>\n<p>HCSO Constable Sherman Eagleton also issued a heartfelt plea to struggling first responders: \u201cYou are needed, and you matter, even when you feel your lowest. To our brothers and sisters in blue\u2014take care of each other. Don\u2019t carry the burden alone. Your family is here for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Harris County Deputies Organization President Jose Lopez acknowledged the urgency of the situation, noting that the department is actively discussing ways to improve mental health resources.<\/p>\n<p>McNeese admitted that recent events have placed a significant strain on the department, saying, \u201cSomething like this has ripple effects you don\u2019t realize for years.\u201d He also acknowledged that HCSO\u2019s Behavioral Health Division is currently too small to meet the growing demand for support.<\/p>\n<p>However, he remains hopeful that their presence within the department can help break the stigma around mental health care. \u201cThe hope is to destigmatize it by having us around. Officers need to know we aren\u2019t here to take away their badge\u2014we\u2019re their advocates.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-the-road-ahead-addressing-mental-health-in-law-enforcement\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Road Ahead: Addressing Mental Health in Law Enforcement<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The deaths of these four deputies have cast a spotlight on the urgent need for improved mental health resources for first responders.
