I have over five years of experience as a security guard at this supermarket. I\u2019ve witnessed a variety of shoplifters, including children playing, adults organizing shelves, and desperate individuals cramming meat inside their coats.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t think twice when I saw a man in a frayed sweatshirt stuffing things into his rucksack. I took his arm, led him to the door, and insisted that he accompany me.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t dispute. didn\u2019t attempt to run at all. simply sighed in exhaustion and followed me to the rear office.<\/p>\n

The store manager was checking his suitcase when I began to fill out the complaint. Then she halted.<\/p>\n

She pushed the objects in my direction and said, \u201cUh\u2026 you might want to look at this.\u201d<\/p>\n

I anticipated razors, drink, and possibly some pricey munchies. Rather, I observed:<\/p>\n

A tiny jar of baby food; a box of diapers; and a can of infant formula<\/p>\n

I glanced up at him. His hands were balled into fists as he stared at the ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have a child?\u201d I inquired.<\/p>\n

He gave a nod but remained silent. I looked at his ID\u2019s address, which was an old motel on the other side of town. I was familiar with that location. Weekly fees, hardly any space, and no actual kitchen.<\/p>\n

My stomach turned over.<\/p>\n

The manager let out a sigh. According to store rules, we must file charges.<\/p>\n

I gave the man another glance. He seemed thin and tired. He wasn\u2019t stealing for his personal benefit. He was attempting to care for his child.<\/p>\n

I decided.<\/p>\n

I took out my wallet and said, \u201cI\u2019ll pay for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The manager looked at me, but she didn\u2019t say anything. After making the payment, I packed the things and gave them to him.<\/p>\n

At last, he looked directly into my eyes. \u201cWhy?\u201d he said in a harsh voice.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t have a suitable response. I simply knew that I couldn\u2019t let a newborn go hungry for a few dollars.<\/p>\n

Should I have done more, I wonder now?<\/p>\n

Though life has a tendency of coming full circle, I didn\u2019t anticipate seeing him again.<\/p>\n

I saw him again two weeks later when getting coffee at a petrol station prior to my shift. He stood outside, pacing back and forth, gazing at the doorway as if he were attempting to summon the bravery to enter.<\/p>\n

Something was new, yet his sweatshirt was the same. He appeared even more slender. Even more exhausted. As if in a matter of days, life had suddenly become much more difficult.<\/p>\n

I approached him. \u201cHi.\u201d<\/p>\n

His face brightened up with recognition after he was startled. \u201cYou,\u201d he said. \u201cThe store employee.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d I paused. \u201cAre you alright?\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed without amusement. \u201cNot really.\u201d Then he declared, \u201cI lost my job,\u201d as though he had decided there was no use in keeping it a secret. Even though you didn\u2019t file charges, they learned about the arrest. The management of the motel says we\u2019ll leave when I don\u2019t pay within three days.<\/p>\n

We. That also applied to the infant.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you related to anyone?\u201d I inquired.<\/p>\n

He gave a headshake. \u201cJust Lily and me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I massaged my jaw. I was by no means wealthy. It was tough to leave this man, though, because of his calm desperation. I reflected on the motel and how I had seen police officers there more times than I could remember. A baby had no place there.<\/p>\n

I said, \u201cCome on.\u201d \u201cLet us fetch you a meal. Have you have any food today?<\/p>\n

His gaze shot to the gas station as if he had been looking for something to scrounge. Then he let out a sigh. \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

We then proceeded to a diner nearby. He ate as if it had been days since he had a substantial meal. As I saw him gently thaw beneath the warmth of meals and a conversation that wasn\u2019t about what he\u2019d done wrong, I let him drink my coffee.<\/p>\n

I learned that Daniel was his name. Lily had only been alive for six months. When she was two weeks old, her mother left, leaving him with only a diaper bag and a hospital bracelet. Since then, he had been trying, but rent didn\u2019t wait and jobs didn\u2019t last.<\/p>\n

He exhaled and wiped his mouth. \u201cWhy you\u2019re doing this is beyond me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I considered it. \u201cBecause I used to be you.\u201d<\/p>\n

He raised his eyebrows.<\/p>\n

I gave a shrug. \u201cI didn\u2019t have children, but I understand what it\u2019s like to have nothing left.\u201d When I had nowhere to go, someone came to my aid. I decided it was time for me to follow suit.<\/p>\n

Silent for a long time, he gazed down at his coffee. Then he said, \u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite my lack of experience, I had a hunch that this was not the end of the narrative. So I decided to do something else.<\/p>\n

I mentioned, \u201cI know a guy.\u201d \u201cI have a guy who owns a warehouse. He is constantly searching for folks who put forth a lot of effort and show up. It\u2019s solid, but it\u2019s not glamorous.<\/p>\n

His gaze expanded. \u201cAre you serious?\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed. But you must appear.<\/p>\n

I nearly chuckled when he nodded so quickly. \u201cI\u2019ll be there. I promise.<\/p>\n

I called. After a week, Daniel was employed. Even if it wasn\u2019t much, it was something. I periodically checked in to make sure he was still in the motel and still protecting Lily. Things altered gradually. Under his eyes, the dark circles disappeared. He began to stand up straighter. His smile widened.<\/p>\n

He then informed me one day that he had accumulated enough money for an apartment.<\/p>\n

I received an unexpected call a year later.<\/p>\n

Daniel said, \u201cHey.\u201d I simply wanted to let you know that we\u2019re doing fine. Lily is now walking. Speaking, too. Even though we\u2019re in a tiny flat, it\u2019s ours. I simply\u2014 He let out a breath. \u201cWithout you, I couldn\u2019t have survived.\u201d<\/p>\n

I grinned. \u201cDude, you did the difficult part.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he replied. \u201cWhen no one else saw me, you did. That was important.<\/p>\n

After hanging up, I sat for a while contemplating how one decision\u2014just one\u2014had transformed someone\u2019s entire life.<\/p>\n

Generosity isn\u2019t always about big gestures. It all comes down to deciding to stop, see someone, and provide assistance. One simple choice could impact someone\u2019s life, and you never know.<\/p>\n
