Show them the proper way to do it.<\/p>\n<p>She let out a big sigh and put her magazine down. \u201cAll right, but I\u2019m going to riot if they serve those terrible sugar-free cookies again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman laughed. \u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I rose up to follow Grandma as she slowly stood up with the nurse\u2019s assistance, but she gave me a stern look and stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, you don\u2019t have to watch me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I grinned. \u201cAre you certain? In order to elicit a rise out of Mr. Romano, she made friends, took part in group activities, and even got into a funny fight about whether Frank Sinatra was overrated.<\/p>\n<p>And she grinned as she saw herself in the mirror, hospital gown and all, on the day she was finally allowed to return home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot bad for an old bat with wrinkles, huh?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I chuckled. \u201cNot bad at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps, just possibly, I also discovered that sometimes the tiniest gestures and the most ridiculous displays of affection can make a huge difference.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, to everyone reading this: Never undervalue the ability to make someone laugh when they\u2019re at their lowest.
