Nobody was particularly noticeable.<\/p>\n<p>The young girl licked her ice pop silently as she stood there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at the bottom,\u201d said the officer beside me in a whisper.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped when I read, \u201cHer name is Lila.\u201d She like pancakes and dinosaurs.<\/p>\n<p>We stopped. A kind couple who lived nearby and had expertise with emergency placements took Lila into a temporary foster home. Ramirez and I began examining the note in the interim. Who was Lila\u2019s mother? Now, where was she? What had she done?<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that it was difficult to find answers. Sadly, she had exhausted her options due to the lengthy queue. She genuinely thought we could provide Lila with a better life than she could, which is why she had left her with us.<\/p>\n<p>Marisol was her name, and she appeared worn out yet resolute when we first met her. She filled us in on everything: how she had to spend months rationing groceries to keep Lila from going hungry, how her family lived across the nation and refused to help, and how she had lost her job during the pandemic. Every night, she had sobbed herself to sleep, questioning whether she was making the right choice.<\/p>\n<p>With tears in her eyes, Marisol remarked, \u201cI just wanted her to be okay.\u201d \u201cEven if it meant that she wasn\u2019t present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is where the twist occurs: social services recommended an alternative to permanently removing Lila.
