be\u00a0life-threatening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The sudden and tragic death of 12-year-old Ryan Gibbons is a\u00a0stark reminder of that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ryan was an energetic boy who loved motorbikes and hiking in the woods \u2013\u00a0but a fatal mistake would soon take his life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Back in 2012, he suffered an asthma attack at school.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">He could have simply used his inhaler at the beginning of the episode, but the life-saving device had been taken from him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: which was locked in the school office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The suffering boy needed his inhaler to open his airways and allow him to breathe.<\/p>\n<div office and spare inhalers were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.ca\/lung-health\/lung-info\/impact-lung-disease\/asthma-can-be-fatal-remembering-ryan-gibbons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">repeatedly confiscated<\/a>\u00a0from Ryan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A group of Ryan\u2019s friends tried to carry him to the office during the attack, but the boys didn\u2019t allow him to keep his puffer with him, despite repeated efforts by his mother and a doctor\u2019s note.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">According to his mother, Sandra Gibbons, Ryan would often bring an extra inhaler to school in order to bypass this rule.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23904\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23904\"><img inhaler locked in a room.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But the school kept taking Ryan\u2019s extra inhaler away.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-892b7ec58fd252e0a4b8dd166b95a3b3\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ryan\u2019s mom said that the school called her\u00a0on several occasions, asking her to pick up an inhaler that Ryan had brought to school.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">He wasn\u2019t allowed to bring it home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201dYou would give him an inhaler but then he would get caught with the inhaler and then it would be taken away,\u201d Sandra Gibbons said, speaking to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-law-passes-to-let-asthmatic-kids-carry-inhalers-in-school-1.3055534\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure So it was actually very frustrating. I didn\u2019t understand why. I didn\u2019t realize that the policy actually stated that the prescribed medication needed to be in the office.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-c6ace70f2bdc001b3fc4f8f03edc3806\" class=\"newsner-c6ace70f2bdc001b3fc4f8f03edc3806 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-2097199077\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Fortunately, Ryan\u2019s tragic death was not in vain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Since Ryan\u2019s death, his mother has vowed to do whatever she could to prevent another family from going through what she went through.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After the funeral, Sandra Gibbons started a petition asking the Ontario government to force school boards to adopt standardized asthma management plans, and urged all three parties to pass a private member\u2019s bill from Progressive Conservative Jeff Yurek.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23909\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23909\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23909\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/04\/04133700\/ryan1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23909\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a id=\"js_1sq\" class=\"_hli\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/OntarioLungAssociation\/?tn-str=k%2AF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Lung Association \u2013 Ontario<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cWhen Ryan passed away, it was like losing everything that I lived for,\u201d Gibbons told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.allergicliving.com\/2014\/03\/23\/ryans-law-aims-to-protect-asthmatic-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Allergic Living<\/a>. \u201cAfter burying my son, I knew that this was a preventable attack.
