At 32, he became a priest, a decision that came nearly a decade after he lost a lung to a respiratory illness and abandoned his chemistry studies.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-his-sister-shared-the-truth\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">His sister shared the truth<\/h2>\n<p>According to his sister, Jorge was a \u201dnormal teenager.\u201d He was polite, studious, and had a particular interest in chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>He was friendly and very protective of her, especially since she was the youngest. In his free time, he loved playing football with his friends in the neighborhood. As he got older, he developed a passion for tango.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing Jorge seems to have developed was a crush on a girl named Amalia Damonte, who lived next door. What started as a simple friendship quickly turned into something deeper, and young Jorge even wrote Amalia a letter around 1948, asking her to marry him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a big, mature, wonderful boy,\u201d she told Argentine media. \u201cWe danced, played on the sidewalks, and spent time in the parks. It was such a beautiful time. We were both humble and cared for the poor. Amalia\u2019s strict parents disapproved of the relationship and forbade her from seeing or writing to Jorge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d\u2019There was only one letter and it cost me a smack in the face from my father,\u201d Amalia said in 2013, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2293634\/Pope-Francis-Is-childhood-sweetheart-claims-turned-marriage-proposal--priest.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Daily Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Amalia reflected, \u201dThese were childish things, nothing more,\u201d but as mentioned, her parents didn\u2019t see it the same way. From that moment on, her parents took strict measures to keep them apart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dMy parents pulled me away completely. From that point on, they did everything possible to separate us,\u201d she added. \u201cWhat I wanted was for him to disappear from the map!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amalia and Jorge Bergoglio lost touch for a while, and months later, Jorge entered the seminary, fulfilling the vow he had made in his letter.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-had-a-crush-on-another-girl\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Had a crush on another girl<\/h2>\n<p>In a 2010 interview, Pope Francis also revealed that he once had a girlfriend with whom he enjoyed dancing the tango, something that likely wasn\u2019t typical for a 12-year-old. He shared, \u201dShe was one of a group of friends with whom I used to go dancing with.\u201d He then went on to say, \u201dThen I discovered my religious vocation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis himself has shared that on his way to celebrate Spring Day, he passed by a church to go to confession and found inspiration in a priest. However, he also admitted that, as a young seminarian, he once had a crush on another girl and briefly questioned his decision to pursue the priesthood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was dazzled by a girl I met at an uncle\u2019s wedding,\u201d he said, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190308004414\/https:\/\/balitangamerica.tv\/pope-francis-spoke-of-being-dazzled-by-girl-possible-change-of-celibacy-rule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Aleteia<\/a>. \u201cI was surprised by her beauty, her intellectual brilliance \u2026 and, well, I was bowled over for quite a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept thinking and thinking about her. When I returned to the seminary after the wedding, I could not pray for over a week because when I tried to do so, the girl appeared in my head.
