in late 2024 and early 2025, and was responsible for three in five Covid cases in the UK in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In February, the\u00a0<span data-track-module=\"internal-body-link\">World Health Organisation<\/span>\u00a0identified the strain as one of two increasing on a global scale, though the risk to public health was classified as low.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">While the variant does not appear to cause worse symptoms than its predecessors, recent testing has found it could be more contagious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Several factors have sparked an explosion in cases according to associate professor James Trauer, a respiratory and public health physician from Monash University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Immunity wanes pretty substantially over three to six months, [but]\u00a0also the virus evolves,\u2019 he told Daily Mail Australia this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The associate professor said the immunity people developed from previous Covid infections will not fully protect them against LP.8.1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018We\u2019re going to see Covid epidemics indefinitely for many years into the future because immunity does wane fairly rapidly,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageCaption\">What can Australians do?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Prof Trauer\u00a0said the best protection for people, particularly those who are immunocompromised or vulnerable to Covid, is through vaccination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018The most recent vaccines are likely to be the most protective against the [variant] that\u2019s around at the moment,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But he added that Australians \u2018don\u2019t need to panic or worry about it the way we did when Covid first emerged\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018It\u2019s a totally different kettle of fish,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mol-para-with-font mol-style-subhead news-ccox\">Who needs to get a Covid vaccine?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">For young, healthy people, particularly those without symptoms, the physician said there is no reason to change daily behaviour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018If you do have symptoms, then also be conscious of that and and don\u2019t go into situations where you could infect somebody who is elderly or at higher risk,\u2019
