In the midst of hardship, she found refuge in two things that would change her life forever: movies and her faith.<\/p>\n<p>Films like\u00a0<em>Mary Poppins<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Sound of Music<\/em>\u00a0offered her a temporary escape, sparking her dream of becoming an actress. Their apartment was often dirty, and her mother insisted on using Tupperware containers to urinate instead of using the bathroom properly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThat went on for years. I could never bring friends over,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>As a teenager, Charlene enrolled at Hollywood High School, where she threw herself into drama classes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI was only interested in getting out and becoming an actress. That\u2019s all I ever thought about,\u201d she once said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-why-she-almost-died-of-embarrassment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why she almost died of embarrassment<\/h2>\n<p>Charlene was doing well, but even at school, it became clear that her home situation was far from ideal. Once, when her mother chaperoned one of Charlene\u2019s junior high dances, \u201dshe started fighting with herself, having a full-on conversation,\u201d Charlene recalls and said she wanted to \u201ddie of embarrassment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Charlene\u2019s passion for acting paid off with small roles on TV shows like\u00a0<em>Happy Days<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Eight is Enough<\/em>. In 1976, she appeared in Disney\u2019s\u00a0<em>Freaky Friday<\/em>, alongside Jodie Foster, and it looked like Charlene\u2019s star was on the rise. But nothing prepared her for what came next.<\/p>\n<p>In 1978, Charlene was cast as Lucy Ewing in\u00a0<em>Dallas<\/em>. It wasn\u2019t a smooth road to the role \u2014 she was initially dismissed for being too young and inexperienced.<\/p>\n<p>But Charlene, who lived in her own in an apartment from the age of 15, didn\u2019t give up. She snuck onto the set for nearly two weeks, determined to prove herself. Eventually, her persistence paid off. Her character\u2019s wedding episode drew a staggering 65 million viewers, cementing her place in TV history.<\/p>\n<p>As her fame grew, so did the pressure. Charlene was everywhere \u2014 gracing magazine covers, making appearances on talk shows, and becoming a favorite on game shows. She was recording music, funding a short film, and hosting events like the Macy\u2019s Thanksgiving Day Parade and Dick Clark\u2019s New Year\u2019s Eve party. In 1982, she married country singer Johnny Lee, but their marriage ended in divorce just two years later. Her private life was practically non-existent. Her marital issues made tabloid headlines, and she was even subjected to obscene phone calls.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, strangers would often try to grab her blonde hair. When she went out to restaurants with her young daughter, people would stare and point at her. Adding to her heartbreak, Charlene\u2019s financial troubles began to mount, culminating in the foreclosure of her home.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-rock-bottom\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rock bottom<\/h2>\n<p>However, most of the people who approached Charlene were kind, and she came to understand that it was just part of the job. By the mid-1980s, however, her acting career had hit rock bottom.<\/p>\n<p>She hosted a\u00a0<em>Saturday Night Live<\/em>\u00a0episode, which turned out to be one of the lowest points of that season. Then, in the spring of \u201985,\u00a0<em>Dallas<\/em>\u00a0let her go. Many fans wanted her back, and she received thousands of letters, as rumors of a potential comeback swirled for years.<\/p>\n<p>Larry Hagman was also deeply disappointed when Charlene Tilton left\u00a0<em>Dallas<\/em>. In 1995, Hagman was diagnosed with liver cancer and required a transplant. Thankfully, he received the transplant and survived the ordeal. While Tilton didn\u2019t appear in any of the\u00a0<em>Dallas<\/em>\u00a0reunion movies, she did make an appearance in\u00a0<em>Dallas Reunion: The Return to Southfork<\/em>\u00a0in 2004.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-her-husband-died-at-54\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Her husband died at 54<\/h2>\n<p>Another huge blow for Charlene came in 2009, when her fianc\u00e9, cinematographer Cheddy Hart, tragically passed away. Cheddy suddenly died of heart failure at age 54 and his passing shattered Charlene\u2019s world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI just sat on the couch drinking and smoking cigarettes,\u201d she told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/health\/dallas-star-charlene-tilton-reveals-tumultuous-childhood-with-mentally-ill-mother-absent-father\/#:~:text=While%20millions%20of%20Americans%20tuned,was%20eventually%20diagnosed%20with%20schizophrenia.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">People<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But instead of letting tragedy define her, Charlene chose to channel her grief into something positive. She became an advocate for autism awareness, using her platform to help those in need.<\/p>\n<p>She also began teaching acting to children and adults on the autism spectrum, finding a new sense of purpose and healing through her work.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the 66-year-old Charlene lives in Nashville, Tennessee, where she\u2019s embraced a quieter life, surrounded by her daughter, Cherish, and two grandsons, whom she lovingly calls \u201cGlamma.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-charlene-tilton-today\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Charlene Tilton today<\/h2>\n<p>She\u2019s come a long way from her tumultuous childhood, and now, as a grandmother, she\u2019s enjoying the fruits of her hard-won peace. In an interview with People, Charlene shared that she has come to terms with her childhood, especially after discovering through a DNA test two years ago that she has three half-siblings who, like her, had never met their biological father.<\/p>\n<p>When they eventually located him, they learned he had passed away six months earlier at 93. Despite this, Charlene says, \u201dI don\u2019t carry a chip on my shoulder. I don\u2019t get into self-pity.
