Speculation swirled, and tension hung in the air as the Catholic Church prepared to reveal its new leader. While his name had circulated among possible candidates, Prevost wasn\u2019t the frontrunner.<\/p>\n<p>Several other figures were seen as favorites heading into the vote \u2014 but they ultimately failed to secure enough support.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-relationship-with-trump\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relationship with Trump<\/h2>\n<p>Much of the world is zeroing in on the fact that Pope Leo XIV hails from the United States, a point of pride for the country\u2019s more than 50 million Catholics.<\/p>\n<p>Some are even speculating that the new pope could end up stealing a bit of the spotlight from none other than President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, Donald Trump weighed in on the historic announcement, calling it a \u201dgreat honor\u201d for the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Posting on Truth Social, the former president wrote: \u201dCongratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday afternoon, President Donald Trump told reporters that he had already received a call from the new pope\u2019s team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve already called. They have already spoken to us, and we\u2019ll see what happens,\u201d Trump said when he was asked whether he planned to meet the pope<\/p>\n<p>Whether the two leaders will find common ground remains to be seen. But within the Vatican, Prevost is seen as a compromise candidate \u2014 someone both conservative Americans and progressive Europeans and Asians could agree on. In a deeply divided Church, he may have been the least controversial choice in a battle of ideologies.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-name\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The name<\/h2>\n<p>And when it comes to ideology and politics, there\u2019s no denying it \u2014 the pope is, inevitably, a political figure. Pope Leo XIV is expected to follow in his predecessor\u2019s footsteps when it comes to championing the rights of refugees and other vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n<p>In his very first address, Leo XIV made it clear: his Church will stand with those who suffer. He also extended a hand beyond the walls of the Vatican \u2014 reaching out to people of other faiths and those outside the Church entirely, signaling a papacy rooted in compassion, unity, and global dialogue.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-169479\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/05\/09075249\/GettyImages-2214170459.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Christopher Furlong\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The name Pope Leo XIV appears to signal a focus on solidarity and bridge-building. While popes aren\u2019t required to change their names upon election, every pontiff over the last 470 years has done so\u2014often choosing the name of a previous pope they admire, as a way to honor their legacy and indicate the direction they hope to take the Church.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-2064795829\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-806a0556eefcbb67f84bd01d3db66c0c\" class=\"newsner-806a0556eefcbb67f84bd01d3db66c0c newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>The last pope to carry the name was Leo XIII, who served from 1878 to 1903. Born Gioacchino Vincenzo Raffaele Luigi Pecci, he was an Italian pope celebrated for his intellectual depth and strong social teachings.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-worker-s-pope\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201dThe worker\u2019s Pope\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Pope Leo XIII\u2019s\u00a0<em>Rerum Novarum<\/em>\u00a0outlined fundamental rights for workers, advocating for fair wages, safe working conditions, and the formation of trade unions. At the same time, the document affirmed the right to private property and free enterprise, while also rejecting both socialism and unregulated capitalism.<\/p>\n<p>Often\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/05\/08\/nx-s1-5390434\/the-catholic-church-has-a-new-leader-and-for-the-first-time-ever-hes-an-american\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">referred<\/a>\u00a0to as the \u201dsocial pope\u201d or \u201dthe workers\u2019 pope,\u201d Leo XIII is considered the architect of the Catholic Church\u2019s modern social teachings, laying the foundation for the Church\u2019s ongoing commitment to social justice.<\/p>\n<p>As Father Vito Crincoli explained to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/new-american-pope-leo-xiv-robert-prevost\/story?id=121604332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ABC News<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking to the history, Leos were strong popes. Like Leo XIII, he loved his people. He loved his people. His people, he considered man not a machine. A man\u2019s work was a reflection of his dignity. We don\u2019t know this yet, but it\u2019d be really interesting to know why he took the name Leo.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-fluent-in-italian-and-spanish\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fluent in Italian and Spanish<\/h2>\n<p>In a political sense, Pope Leo XIV may end up mirroring Pope Francis in his concern for the poor and marginalized. His choice of name certainly seems to indicate this.<\/p>\n<p>However, he also appears to be more conservative \u2014 especially when it comes to issues like LGBTQ rights and the role of women in the Church. He has, for example, spoken out firmly against same-sex marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Leo XIV previously served as the Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru from 2015 to 2023 and was the General of the Order of Saint Augustine from 2001 to 2013.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1003890419\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-705fa26d7aa24ee03c5154838f255516\" class=\"newsner-705fa26d7aa24ee03c5154838f255516 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>Fluent in English, Spanish, and Italian, he teaches in all three languages.
