But beyond the daily joys of parenthood, she\u2019s taken on a larger mission\u2014to redefine beauty and help others recognize that our so-called imperfections are, in fact, part of what makes us perfect. Her motivation stems from a deeply personal place: her daughter Winry was born with an extremely rare condition known as congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN), a birthmark that covers nearly a quarter of her face.<\/p>\n<p>When Winry was born in February 2021, Nicole was taken by surprise. After a healthy and fairly routine pregnancy, she never expected her daughter to have a skin condition. \u201cI was lucky to have a pretty average pregnancy,\u201d she shared on her blog. \u201cMorning sickness in the early weeks, but I felt great through most of it.\u201d Nothing had indicated that anything unusual was coming.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until the nurses handed Winry to Nicole that she noticed something she hadn\u2019t anticipated. At first glance, she thought the mark on her baby\u2019s head might be a bruise. But within moments, it became clear that it wasn\u2019t. \u201cMy husband and I realized quickly that it wasn\u2019t a bruise,\u201d Nicole recalled. \u201cIt looked a lot like a mole, but I had never seen anything like it before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though the doctors and nurses were full of praise for the smooth delivery and reassured her that Winry\u2019s vitals were all perfectly normal, Nicole couldn\u2019t shake her initial worries. \u201cSome of the adrenaline from the birth wore off, and I started to feel real concern. I didn\u2019t know what questions to ask. I just held her tightly and loved on her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Organization for Rare Disorders, CMN can vary greatly in appearance\u2014ranging from light brown to nearly black, and occurring anywhere on the body. While Nicole and her partner were initially unfamiliar with the condition, they quickly made it their mission to educate themselves and others\u2014not just about CMN, but about the importance of seeing beauty in all forms.<\/p>\n<div class=\"autors-widget\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"autors-container-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Today, Nicole uses her platform to raise awareness and promote acceptance. \u201cFor a lot of people, Winry is the first child they\u2019ve seen with a birthmark like this. That\u2019s part of why I share our story,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a chance to start conversations\u2014with kids and adults alike\u2014about differences, and about seeing those differences as something to embrace, not hide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicole and her partner also prioritize Winry\u2019s health. Because CMN can potentially increase the risk of developing melanoma, they take careful steps to protect her skin. Sun protection, hats, and regular dermatology visits are now a routine part of life. Still, Nicole admits that what she fears most isn\u2019t medical\u2014it\u2019s the social challenges her daughter may face in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur biggest hope is for her to grow up confident, happy, and proud of who she is,\u201d Nicole shared. \u201cWe know kids can be unkind, and the world doesn\u2019t always know how to react to what\u2019s different. But if we can do our part to help change that\u2014even just a little\u2014then we\u2019ve done something worthwhile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for Winry herself, she\u2019s thriving. Full of energy and personality, she\u2019s described by her mother as endlessly joyful and expressive. \u201cShe radiates happiness. She\u2019s always laughing, always shrieking with joy,\u201d Nicole said. \u201cShe\u2019s already talking up a storm, and yes\u2014she\u2019s got some sass. She knows what she wants, and she lets you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Winry\u2019s story is more than just one family\u2019s experience\u2014it\u2019s a powerful reminder that every child is beautiful, and every difference is worth celebrating. In a world that sometimes rushes to judge, Nicole and Winry stand as a beacon of strength, love, and acceptance.<\/p>\n<p>Their journey encourages all of us to look beyond appearances and embrace the diversity that makes humanity so remarkable.
