The girl behind the counter smiled like she didn\u2019t recognize me, even though I come in every week for day-old bread. I told her, \u201cToday\u2019s my birthday,\u201d and she said, \u201cOh, happy birthday,\u201d like she was reading it off a cue card.<\/p>\n<p>I bought a small cake. Vanilla with strawberries. I even had them write \u201cHappy 97th, Mr. L.\u201d on it. Felt silly asking for it, but I did.<\/p>\n<p>Back in my room, I set it on the crate I use as a table. Lit a single candle. Sat down, and waited.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know why I expected anyone to come. My son, Eliot, hasn\u2019t called in five years. Last time we spoke, I said something about how his wife talked down to me. Maybe I shouldn\u2019t have. He hung up, and that was that. No calls, no visits. I don\u2019t even know where he lives now.<\/p>\n<p>I cut myself a slice. The cake was good. Sweet, soft, fresh.<\/p>\n<p>I took a photo of it with my old flip phone. Woke up when the bus headlights lit up my room.<\/p>\n<p>Then I heard it.<\/p>\n<p>A knock.<\/p>\n<p>I thought maybe it was a noise from downstairs or the wind. But then, there it was again. Soft, but real.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the door, half-expecting the landlord or some kid from the bakery. But standing there was a young woman, probably in her early twenties, holding a phone and looking nervous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you Mr. L?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded. \u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She let out a little breath. \u201cI\u2019m sorry to bother you. I\u2019m\u2026 Eliot\u2019s daughter. Nora.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nearly dropped my cane.<\/p>\n<p>She went on, fast, like she was afraid I\u2019d shut the door. \u201cMy dad never talks about you. I only found your number by accident\u2014he still had it saved under \u2018Dad\u2019. I saw the text you sent and, I don\u2019t know, I just\u2026 I had to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her. Blonde like her mother, but the same sharp eyes Eliot had when he was young.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he know you\u2019re here?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head. \u201cNo. He\u2019d be mad. But I wanted to meet you. And I brought something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She held out a little paper bag. Inside was a sandwich. Turkey and mustard. My favorite. I hadn\u2019t mentioned that in years.<\/p>\n<p>We sat at the crate and split the rest of the cake. She asked questions. About her dad\u2019s childhood, about my old garden, about why we stopped talking.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t sugarcoat things. I told her I said some things I shouldn\u2019t have, but also that pride can build a wall so tall, you forget who you were trying to protect in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded. Said she understood.<\/p>\n<p>We laughed a bit. Cried a little too. She showed me photos on her phone\u2014her little brother, her college apartment, her cat named Miso.<\/p>\n<p>It felt like something I\u2019d been holding in my chest for years finally let go.<\/p>\n<p>Before she left, she asked if she could come again. I told her she\u2019d better.<\/p>\n<p>And just like that, the room felt warmer.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, there was a message on my phone.<\/p>\n<p>From Eliot.<\/p>\n<p>Just three words: Is she okay?<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it for a long while. Then I wrote back: She\u2019s more than okay. She\u2019s wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>Later that week, I heard another knock. This time it was Eliot.<\/p>\n<p>He stood there awkwardly, hands stuffed in his coat pockets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t sure if you\u2019d open the door,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither was I,\u201d I told him. \u201cBut here we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And we sat. Not to fix everything that had broken\u2014but to begin something again.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what I\u2019ve learned: Sometimes the people we miss are just a message away.
