I washed outside like a pioneer while she sipped wine inside. The next morning, I overheard her on the phone: \u201cShe thinks the shower\u2019s broken. It works fine. I just wanted to see what kind of girl she is. A little test.\u201d I was stunned \u2014 and furious. But I kept calm. Later that day,<\/p>\n<p>karma arrived in the form of a plumber. Josh\u2019s mom had apparently decided to take a shower \u2014 in the very much functional bathroom \u2014 and didn\u2019t realize the plumber had a key. He walked in on her mid-rinse. Josh\u2019s dad, confused, said the only issue was the kitchen sink. That\u2019s when Josh finally realized the truth: \u201cWait\u2026 you lied?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We left that night. Josh didn\u2019t speak to his mom on the way out. He apologized for not standing up for me sooner. I just smiled and said, \u201cSome tests backfire.\u201d Because sometimes, karma doesn\u2019t need help.
