O\u2019Brien, senior executive editor at\u00a0<em>Bloomberg Opinion<\/em>, joined the program\u2019s second-ever episode to unpack Trump\u2019s recent comments about wanting a third term in office, something barred by the U.S. Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Brien, a long-time Trump observer, said the former president is largely driven by either \u201cself-aggrandizement\u201d or \u201cself-preservation,\u201d and suggested that while Trump might fantasize about staying in power indefinitely, he doubts he\u2019ll actually pursue another term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019d love to live until he\u2019s 300,\u201d O\u2019Brien joked. \u201cAnd he\u2019d probably like to be president for 200 of those years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But at 78, Trump is not immune to the passage of time. \u201cWhat struck me, watching that clip, was just how much\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0has aged,\u201d said O\u2019Brien. \u201cWhen we talk about what might stand in the way of a third term, yes, there are voters, and yes, the 22nd Amendment, but there\u2019s also the reality that he turns 79 in June.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though the Constitution bars anyone from being elected\u00a0president\u00a0more than twice, O\u2019Brien said Trump\u2019s health, especially his fear of mental decline, is a more pressing issue, per\u00a0<em>The Washington Post<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-169773\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/05\/15073307\/GettyImages-2213423628.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/05\/15073307\/GettyImages-2213423628.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/05\/15073307\/GettyImages-2213423628-768x512.jpg 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHe lives in fear of following the same path his father did, from dementia to Alzheimer\u2019s,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a burden he\u2019s carried for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fred Trump, a successful real estate developer, died in 1999 at age 93 after a years-long battle with Alzheimer\u2019s. He had first been diagnosed with\u00a0dementia\u00a0in 1991 but continued to work well into his decline. \u201cHe came into the office every day until the day he went to the hospital,\u201d recalled family friend Richard Levy.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Brien noted that Donald Trump rarely addresses the topic, in part because of the political risk. He has repeatedly mocked former President\u00a0Joe Biden\u2019s mental acuity, making any public acknowledgment of his own concerns tricky. But, O\u2019Brien added, those close to Trump have noticed the signs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompare him now to Trump 1.0, the speech is more slurred, the posture is slouched, the energy seems drained,\u201d O\u2019Brien observed. \u201cI question how much genuine enthusiasm he has left for the job, beyond the fact that it keeps him out of prison and in the spotlight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s nephew, Fred C. Trump III, echoed similar sentiments in an interview last year with\u00a0<em>People<\/em>, saying he\u2019s seen signs of mental decline in his uncle that feel eerily familiar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cLike anyone else, I\u2019ve noticed the shift,\u201d said Fred, 61. \u201cAnd I see it unfolding in a way that\u2019s very similar to how my grandfather declined.
