A classmate tossed a piece of cheese that hit Karanbir\u2019s neck at his school in London. No one expected it to be deadly \u2014 especially not his classmates or teachers. But within minutes, Karanbir, known as Karan, was in critical condition, and soon after, he was rushed to Great Ormond Street Hospital.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-9fc9246bb861cddf7435da133da01f4b\" class=\"newsner-9fc9246bb861cddf7435da133da01f4b newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-353559445\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>Despite the efforts of emergency workers and doctors, Karanbir passed away just days later. Karanbir, who had multiple severe allergies including to dairy, went into cardiac arrest after the reaction \u2014 and later suffered from post-cardiac arrest syndrome, a condition that ultimately contributed to his tragic death.<\/p>\n<p>After two weeks in the hospital, his mother was faced with the unimaginable decision to turn off her son\u2019s life support.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe id=\"instagram-embed-0\" class=\"instagram-media instagram-media-rendered\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B4SSb5DnKhq\/embed\/captioned\/?cr=1&amp;v=14&amp;wp=640&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fen.stories.newsner.com&amp;rp=%2Fnews%2Fmom-shares-sons-final-moments-after-classmate-throws-cheese-at-him%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwY2xjawKjVv1leHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETExZmtoSkNTWVE1OFBHV05NAR6y0o9i8jJyd1QSwK9GjtEm6vU2hIlSx-bM61G6eLUHK0N8ohp3JCPhlelsV#%7B%22ci%22%3A0%2C%22os%22%3A990.3999999761581%7D\" height=\"1024\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-instgrm-payload-id=\"instagram-media-payload-0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t want to switch it off \u2013 it wasn\u2019t fair on his little body to go through this,\u201d Rina told This Morning in a heartbreaking interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe smiled when the machine was turned off [\u2026] they took him into another room, and we said our last goodbyes before he was taken down and he had a smile on his face.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-expired-pen\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expired pen<\/h2>\n<p>It was an unimaginable moment \u2014 one no parent should have to endure. But Rina Cheema has made it her mission to ensure Karanbir\u2019s legacy lives on by raising awareness of the life-threatening nature of allergies.<\/p>\n<p>She wants students everywhere to understand that allergies are not a joke. And she wants them to see the truth \u2014 including the painful photo of her son in intensive care.<\/p>\n<p>Karanbir suffered from severe allergies to dairy and other foods and carried an EpiPen for emergencies \u2014 but on the day of the incident, the only dose of adrenaline he received came from a pen that was nearly a year out of date.<\/p>\n<p>That expired pen had likely lost its effectiveness and \u201cprobably had less potency,\u201d according to experts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-b63b9cfff586381bb0cfd67fa7e04dbd\" class=\"newsner-b63b9cfff586381bb0cfd67fa7e04dbd newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-1284372696\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>That single detail raised haunting questions: Could he have survived if the medication had been up to date?<\/p>\n<p>At the 2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-london-48148697\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">inquest<\/a>, it was also revealed that Karanbir showed obvious symptoms of anaphylaxis \u2014 including frantic scratching \u2014 for several minutes before the adrenaline was finally administered.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Adam Fox, a pediatric allergy expert at Evelina London Children\u2019s Hospital, stressed to the court how crucial early action is in these cases. \u201cAt the first sign of anaphylaxis it\u2019s \u2018get the adrenaline out and make sure they get it as soon as possible,\u2019\u201d he said, calling it \u201can important learning point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also explained just how rare and devastating this situation was.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-308729a292d0c3ab78fb60cabb0ab2dc\" class=\"newsner-308729a292d0c3ab78fb60cabb0ab2dc newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-1080088651\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhere this case is extraordinarily unusual is the nature of the event that led to the anaphylaxis,\u201d Fox said. \u201cIf it was skin contact alone that caused, in this case, fatal anaphylaxis, I believe that to be unprecedented.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-childish-and-thoughtless\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cChildish and thoughtless\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>During the inquest, the boy who flicked the cheese and another who handed it to him testified from behind a screen. Both were just 13 years old at the time and told the court they had no idea Karanbir had a severe allergy.<\/p>\n<p>The coroner, Mary Hassell, ultimately described the boy\u2019s actions as \u201cchildish and thoughtless,\u201d not malicious. Still, she also called out the school for a \u201cmissed opportunity\u201d to better educate students and staff about allergy safety.<\/p>\n<p>Rina Cheema lovingly described her son Karan as her \u201cbest friend\u201d and \u201cthe star of the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-6321f4d72a085e27918dda32016f00f3\" class=\"newsner-6321f4d72a085e27918dda32016f00f3 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-601519609\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>Speaking after the inquest, Karanbir\u2019s mother, Rina Cheema, emphasized the need for greater awareness around allergies. \u201cI think it would help a lot of children out there, whatever happened to my son, if the schools, the institutions, hospital, paramedics, were to become aware how serious allergies are,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-42275\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/05\/27182513\/karan1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"263\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Family handout<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She recalled her son\u2019s desperate plea during the reaction, adding, \u201cMy son was mature, he knew himself how fast to react. His words were at school: \u2018Please help me or I\u2019m going to die\u2019.
