It reminds us of the importance of compassion, understanding, and support for those silently struggling.<\/p>\n<p>One of the many affected by this heartbreaking reality is Australian actress and filmmaker Clare McCann.<\/p>\n<p>In a deeply emotional announcement, she revealed the tragic loss of her 13-year-old son, Atreyu, who took his own life after enduring months of relentless bullying at school. Through a heartbreaking\u00a0Instagram post, Clare opened up about the unimaginable pain her family now faces and made a desperate plea \u2014 not only to honor Atreyu\u2019s memory but to fight for lasting change.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-months-of-brutal-bullying\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Months of brutal bullying<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cAs my worst nightmare has come to life my child\u2019s has been stolen. It breaks my heart beyond what words can compare to share that in a moment of unbearable pain Atreyu took his own life,\u201d Clare wrote. She described Atreyu as \u201cthe brightest light in my world \u2014 kind, creative, and endlessly loved,\u201d adding, \u201cRight now we are grieving a loss that words can\u2019t hold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The loss of her only child has pushed Clare to launch a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/help-preserve-my-son-after-bullying-tragedy?attribution_id=sl:6970a07c-1544-4f35-998e-9e90e64b057f&amp;lang=en_US&amp;utm_campaign=man_ss_icons&amp;utm_medium=customer&amp;utm_source=copy_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">GoFundMe campaign<\/a>\u00a0aiming to raise $195,290 USD ($300,000 AUD) to cryogenically preserve Atreyu\u2019s body within seven days of his passing.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign also seeks funds for medical and legal costs and to establish a trust in Atreyu\u2019s name. So far, only a small fraction of the goal has been reached.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-170611\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/05\/27083822\/clare1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"538\" height=\"537\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/help-preserve-my-son-after-bullying-tragedy?attribution_id=sl:6970a07c-1544-4f35-998e-9e90e64b057f&amp;lang=en_US&amp;utm_campaign=man_ss_icons&amp;utm_medium=customer&amp;utm_source=copy_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">GoFundMe<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Clare explained that if they raise more than the target amount, the extra funds will go toward anti-bullying reforms, legal action, and supporting other families who face similar tragedies. \u201cMy 13-year-old son tragically took his own life after months of brutal bullying at a NSW public school,\u201d she wrote on the fundraiser page.<\/p>\n<p>She blasted the school system, saying, \u201cThis was not his fault. He was let down by the schooling system as he suffered horrendous amounts of bullying. Now I humbly beg of you to help me preserve his life and help me fight against this inhumane landslide of child suicides caused by unchecked bullying by schools and teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Atreyu had just started Year 7 in early February, at South Sydney High School.<\/p>\n<p>Within two days, Clare\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailytelegraph.com.au\/subscribe\/news\/1\/?sourceCode=DTWEB_WRE170_a_GGL&amp;dest=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailytelegraph.com.au%2Fnews%2Fnsw%2Fmonths-of-bullying-mother-begs-for-help-after-13yo-boy-takes-his-own-life%2Fnews-story%2F675b9b84425b83aed08bb030ed4c74d3&amp;memtype=anonymous&amp;mode=premium&amp;v21=GROUPA-Segment-2-NOSCORE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">says<\/a>\u00a0he was already in tears, begging her to stop the bullies. He endured severe abuse, including an incident where classmates allegedly tried to drown him during a school camp. \u201cWhen he told me, I was mortified that the school hadn\u2019t called me,\u201d Clare said. She immediately demanded a meeting with school officials.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-physical-attacks\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Physical attacks<\/h2>\n<p>The bullying went beyond physical attacks \u2014 Atreyu was humiliated when bullies drew on his body and tormented by constant harassing phone calls. Clare recounted, \u201cThey just destroyed him. And in a moment of immense pain, he just did something, because I think he just didn\u2019t know what else to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In early April, after Atreyu told her, \u201cIf he had to go to school, he\u2019d kill himself,\u201d Clare pulled him out. Away from his tormentors and with professional help, she believed he was starting to heal. \u201cI just wish I knew what he was thinking,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite numerous warnings to the school \u2014 at least 10 times between February and April \u2014 and notifications to the Department of Education and Children\u2019s Services, Clare says no effective action was taken.<\/p>\n<p>She holds medical records, psychologist reports, a formal PTSD diagnosis, and emails as proof of her repeated appeals for help.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-170612\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/05\/27083903\/clare13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"539\" height=\"539\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/help-preserve-my-son-after-bullying-tragedy?attribution_id=sl:6970a07c-1544-4f35-998e-9e90e64b057f&amp;lang=en_US&amp;utm_campaign=man_ss_icons&amp;utm_medium=customer&amp;utm_source=copy_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">GoFundMe<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Though Atreyu didn\u2019t leave a note, Clare shared that they often spoke about the afterlife. \u201cWe\u2019d talk about the future, about heaven, how we\u2019d like to come back and do things together. Those were his wishes and dreams, and I can\u2019t fail him now,\u201d she said. Clare hopes cryopreserving Atreyu\u2019s body could someday reunite them.<\/p>\n<p>A public figure with a national platform, Clare is committed to using her voice to demand justice and prevent other families from enduring similar pain. \u201cThis is about hope and justice. Refusing to let my son\u2019s story end in silence,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Officials have expressed condolences and offered support. NSW Deputy Premier and Education Minister Prue Car called Atreyu\u2019s death \u201ca heartbreaking tragedy\u201d and extended sympathy to the family, emphasizing that no parent should face such loss.
