After six long months of working in different countries, they finally carved out time for each other.<\/p>\n<p>This trip was meant to be their reunion \u2014 a chance to reconnect and recharge. The plan? Start in bustling Ho Chi Minh City, then head to the dreamy coastal resort of Nha Trang for sun, sand, and serenity.<\/p>\n<p>But along with 23 other passengers on Vietnam Airlines Flight 474, their journey would take a devastating turn,.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-a-gut-feeling-before-takeoff\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A gut feeling before takeoff<\/h2>\n<p>As a lifelong claustrophobe, Annette Herfkens felt a wave of dread as she stepped onto the Yakovlev Yak-40 on November 14th, 1992. The old, Soviet-built jet was supposed to carry her and her fianc\u00e9 to the sunny beaches of Nha Trang.<\/p>\n<p>Her partner, whom she called \u201cPasje,\u201d tried to soothe her nerves with a white lie: the flight would be just 20 minutes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-42285\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/05\/28125507\/tster.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/05\/28125507\/tster.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/05\/28125507\/tster-768x512.jpg 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vietnam_Airlines_Flight_474\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wikipedia Commons<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But when 40 minutes passed and they were still airborne, panic set in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPasje looked at me with fear. \u2018Of course, a shitty little toy plane drops like this!\u2019 I said, reaching for his hand. \u2018It\u2019s just an air pocket \u2014 don\u2019t worry.\u2019 But he was right to worry. We dropped again. Someone screamed. It went pitch-black. Seconds later, we made impact,\u201d Herfkens recalled to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2016\/10\/02\/i-was-the-sole-survivor-of-a-plane-crash-and-spent-7-days-in-the-jungle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New York Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-510cfc080c19e80a644608035781da30\" class=\"newsner-510cfc080c19e80a644608035781da30 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-1616272946\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-waking-up-in-a-nightmare\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Waking up in a nightmare<\/h2>\n<p>When she regained consciousness, the Vietnamese jungle roared around her.<\/p>\n<p>A stranger\u2019s body was draped over her. Nearby, van der Pas remained strapped in his seat \u2014 smiling, motionless. Gone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s where you have fight or flight,\u201d she said. \u201cI definitely chose flight,\u201d Annette told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2023\/apr\/25\/how-we-survive-i-was-the-sole-survivor-of-a-plane-crash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Her memories of escaping the wreckage are a blur. \u201cIt must have been excruciating pain to get out of there,\u201d she said. \u201cSo I must have crawled out of the plane and lifted myself down. And then I must have crawled another 30 yards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was badly injured \u2014 a shattered hip, broken leg, collapsed lung, and bone protruding from her jaw. But she was alive. And not alone.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-surrounded-by-the-dead\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Surrounded by the dead<\/h2>\n<p>Because the early hours after the crash, Annette wasn\u2019t the only survivor.<\/p>\n<p>Annette heard groans, cries. A Vietnamese businessman even gave her clothing after her skirt tore. But slowly, one by one, the voices faded into silence.<\/p>\n<p>Soon, she was surrounded only by the dead.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-7d0b543eeba149db8b56de6162bb798a\" class=\"newsner-7d0b543eeba149db8b56de6162bb798a newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-1660689945\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>To survive, she used yoga breathing to manage her lung injury \u2014 \u201cmindfulness before we all knew the word,\u201d she called it.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-42291\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/05\/28140445\/wil.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"592\" height=\"420\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"http:\/\/annetteherfkens.com\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawKj9w5leHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFneEhhYVhRb0R6Qzh1bzFqAR56iUdbH1kVPlNuXdC7iPSJOUFMKsdY--v-YY9AmDqARJZMnxKN5Fmft2I6DQ_aem_98bTti3De6faeZ0W4o_-EQ#book\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Annette Herfkens with Willem van der Pas in Peru, 1983. \/ annetteherfkens.com<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She collected rainwater using insulation from the plane\u2019s wings, tearing her elbows so badly they later required skin grafts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery two hours I would take a sip,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd then\u2014I congratulated myself. And that also makes you survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-the-world-thought-she-was-gone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The world thought she was gone<\/h3>\n<p>Back home, families were grieving. Her obituary ran in the paper. Her boss sent a condolence letter. But her colleague and close friend, Jaime Lupa, refused to give up.<\/p>\n<div class=\"xghww6838c066b9fd2\">\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1712269\" data-uid=\"0ff86\">\n<div id=\"mgw1712269_0ff86\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"mgbox\">\n<div class=\"mgheader\">\n<p>\u201cWhen I promised Annette\u2019s father before I left: \u2018I will bring your daughter back alive,\u2019 he became furious,\u201d Lupa said. \u201c\u2018You are an idiot,\u2019 he exclaimed. \u2018Get real!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the seventh day, Herfkens felt herself slipping away. But on the eighth day, a miracle happened.<\/p>\n<p>A Vietnamese policeman and his team arrived \u2014 carrying only body bags.<\/p>\n<p>They didn\u2019t expect to find anyone alive.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-a-new-life-after-tragedy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A new life after tragedy<\/h2>\n<p>After being carried down the mountain on a makeshift stretcher, Herfkens returned home. In December, she attended her fianc\u00e9\u2019s funeral \u2014 arriving in a wheelchair. By New Year\u2019s, she was walking. By February 1993, she was back at her banking job.<\/p>\n<p>But grief lingered. Anger bubbled. Her trauma didn\u2019t disappear.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, she married Jaime Lupa \u2014 the friend who had promised to bring her home \u2014 and had two children, Joosje and Max. Though the couple later divorced, she forged a new life while holding onto the jungle that nearly killed her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you accept what\u2019s not there, then you see what is there,\u201d she said. \u201cI accepted that I was not with my fianc\u00e9 on the beach\u2026 Once I accepted that, I saw what was there \u2013 and it was this beautiful jungle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mantra became the core of her book\u00a0<em>Turbulence: A True Story of Survival<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-you-learn-from-taking-losses\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cYou learn from taking losses\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Later, Annette also became an inspirational speaker, and she believes it wasn\u2019t just luck that saved her \u2014 it was instinct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was the youngest child \u2013 I grew up with a lot of love \u2013 but I was left alone. I didn\u2019t have parents telling me what I should do and feel. So I developed instincts,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She even suspects undiagnosed ADHD helped her become \u201cinventive and charming\u201d as a kid. \u201cIf I had had Ritalin as a kid, I would never have developed the qualities I had for surviving the jungle,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-f8a232e567f28064c97cd50d15de258d\" class=\"newsner-f8a232e567f28064c97cd50d15de258d newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-523696375\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-42290\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/05\/28140257\/turbue.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"960\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bookturbulence\/photos\/pb.100029087333421.-2207520000\/671301979627322\/?type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Facebook \/ Turbulence<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When her son Max was diagnosed with autism, she used the same survival mindset: \u201cYou have to mourn what\u2019s not there,\u201d she said. \u201cBut focus on what is there. With my son, that\u2019s what I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She joined inclusive communities, connected with parents from all backgrounds, and even took Max on \u201cdry runs\u201d to the police station\u2014just in case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were many black autistic boys in our circle, and it was so important to the mothers to teach them that when the police came, they had to keep their hands out of their pockets,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-still-counting-the-days\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Still counting the days<\/h3>\n<p>Each year, Herfkens marks the eight-day anniversary of the crash. She sips water. She buys herself a gift.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like treating myself,\u201d she says with a smile. \u201cI\u2019m good at that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her trauma never fully left. She avoids sitting behind other passengers on planes. Vietnamese food can still trigger flashbacks. But she has never stopped surviving.<\/p>\n<p>Even Hollywood producers couldn\u2019t quite understand her story \u2014 wanting to make it more about her.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-42288\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/05\/28140056\/annetee.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"338\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=150740615264062&amp;set=a.997708970567218\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Annette today \/ Facebook<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI really think that why I survived is because I got over myself,\u201d she said. \u201cYou get over your little self, then you get your instinct to work, then you achieve stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To this day, the jungle\u2014where she lost everything\u2014is her sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been my \u2018safe place\u2019 ever since,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Because for Annette Herfkens, survival isn\u2019t a single moment. It\u2019s a mindset. A way of life.
