Serena N. Wileman, was a dedicated Naval Aviator. She was commissioned in 2018 and joined the Electronic Attack Squadron 130, also referred to as the \u201cZappers,\u201d in 2021. Wileman\u2019s contributions to the squadron\u2019s mission and her commitment to excellence were widely recognized.<\/p>\n<p>Wileman and Evans had just returned from a protracted deployment to the Middle East, where they conducted missions over Yemen and supported operations in the Red Sea. Their bravery and dedication to national security were demonstrated during their service in these demanding settings.<\/p>\n<p>The Crash: A Tragic Death<br \/>\nAt a height of about 6,000 feet, the two-seat electronic warfare aircraft, the EA-18G Growler, crashed into a remote, wooded area east of Mount Rainier while it was on a routine training flight. Search and rescue efforts were hampered by the challenging terrain and unfavorable weather. Recovery crews located the wreckage and verified the deaths of both pilots in spite of these difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of the collision is still being looked into. In order to prevent such tragedies, the Navy has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Respecting Their Heritage<br \/>\nEvans and Wileman have been honored by the Navy and the larger military community for their exceptional service and the profound impact they had on others. \u201cIt is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of two beloved Zappers,\u201d said Commander Timothy Warburton, the commanding officer of the \u201cZappers,\u201d expressing deep sorrow over the loss. Our top priorities at the moment are providing for the families of our fallen pilots, as well as the health and welfare of our sailors and the Growler community.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, President Joe Biden issued a statement praising the sacrifice and service of the aviators: \u201cJill and I lament the untimely deaths of two naval pilots.\u201d After a lengthy deployment to the Middle East to defend against Houthi missile and drone attacks in the Red Sea, they had just returned to the United States and were among the best in our country.<\/p>\n<p>A Permanent Effect<br \/>\nThe tragic deaths of Lt. Wileman and Lt. Cmdr. Evans serve as a reminder of the risks that military personnel face while performing their duties.
