He dismembered her body with a chainsaw, burning her remains and smashing and scattering her bones in a septic pond to avoid detection.<\/p>\n<p>Later in 1998, Purkey, then working as a plumber, beat 80-year-old Mary Bales to death with a claw hammer. After he returned to her home to start a fire \u2013 meant to cover his tracks \u2013 he was seen by Bales\u2019 neighbors, who grew suspicious and called the police.<\/p>\n<p>Purkey was eventually arrested and pleaded guilty to the murder of Bales. Yet after being sentenced to life in state prison, he voluntarily gave up information about the murder of Long in a bid to serve out his sentence in federal prison instead.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-172568\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/07\/01114305\/Skarmavbild-2025-07-01-kl.-13.42.45.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1054px) 100vw, 1054px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/07\/01114305\/Skarmavbild-2025-07-01-kl.-13.42.45.png 1054w, https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/07\/01114305\/Skarmavbild-2025-07-01-kl.-13.42.45-768x775.png 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1054\" height=\"1064\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>As per reports, however, Purkey neglected to secure any sort of promise over what sort of sentence the prosecution would pursue for his having kidnapped, raped and murdered the teenage Long.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately he was found guilty of the crime and sentenced to the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p>Purkey was executed in 2020, by way of being given a lethal injection of pentobarbital.<\/p>\n<p>His autopsy revealed that he suffered from\u00a0\u2018severe bilateral acute pulmonary oedema\u2019 and \u2018frothy pulmonary oedema in the trachea and main stem bronchi\u2019, meaning that fluid entered his lungs and trachea quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/world\/north-america\/death-row-killers-excruciating-execution-was-like-drowning\/news-story\/e691914a1aca04298fab8147c16744d2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">News.com.au<\/a>, Dr Gail Van Norman explained: \u201cIt is a virtual medical certainty, that most, if not all, prisoners will experience excruciating suffering, including sensations of drowning and suffocation from [the lethal injection drug] pentobarbital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Expressing regret for the murder of Jennifer Long with his final words, Purkey said: \u201cI deeply regret the pain and suffering I caused to Jennifer\u2019s family. I am deeply sorry. I deeply regret the pain I caused to my daughter, who I love so very much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis sanitized murder really does not serve no purpose whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shortly prior to Purkey\u2019s execution, concerns had been raised that he was suffering from Alzheimer\u2019s disease and so was unfit to be executed.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/a494e22c8a4449118f7ee60963804f92\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">According to AP News<\/a>, the inmate saw Bill Clinton on TV the night before his execution and said he would vote for Clinton in the upcoming presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>The convicted killer also requested pecan pie for his last meal, but asked to have it \u201clater\u201d, unaware that there wouldn\u2019t be a \u201clater\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A death row inmate suffered an agonizing execution in 2020, hours after making a \u201cmistake\u201d relating to his last meal request.
