Her body was covered in strange, raised growths. Instinctively, he lifted his camera and started shooting. Later, he shared the images on Facebook, not expecting the emotional reaction they would spark online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was calmly grazing,\u201d he recalled. \u201cShe didn\u2019t appear to be in distress, but the growths looked painful. People were understandably concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To raise awareness, Marius tagged South African National Parks (SANParks) in his post. Though he hadn\u2019t received a reply at the time, his photos quickly spread, catching the attention of global animal welfare groups.<\/p>\n<p>One of those organizations, WorldWide Vets, stepped in to explain the mystery. Dr. Gemma Campling, the group\u2019s founder, identified the cause: papillomavirus. Specifically, a bovine variant known to affect wild giraffes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many types of papillomavirus, each specific to certain species,\u201d Dr. Campling explained. \u201cIn giraffes, the disease is believed to be spread through oxpecker birds. As they move between animals, pecking at parasites, they can transmit the virus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the condition is not fatal. In many cases, animals recover without medical intervention. \u201cThere\u2019s no treatment available for giraffes,\u201d Dr. Campling said. \u201cBut most infections are self-limiting. The animal can fully recover. It\u2019s also important to note this virus can\u2019t be passed to humans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That said, the severity of the giraffe\u2019s condition can\u2019t be ignored. \u201cIt\u2019s not life-threatening,\u201d she added, \u201cbut as the growths enlarge, they almost certainly cause discomfort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the visible swelling, the giraffe carried on as if nothing was wrong\u2014grazing peacefully in the golden grass.
