You may expect the staff to feel horribly depressed as they care for people who are unlikely to survive the year. It naturally draws you inward. There\u2019s reflection, and often people focus on the best points of having lived and having mattered. And that\u2019s usually our relationships.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"div-gpt-ad-theheartysoul_com-medrectangle-3-0\" class=\"ezoic-ad ezads-sticky-intradiv ezfound\" data-google-query-id=\"CJCghe2uqI4DFe9HHQkdtDIBtw\"><\/span>For years, palliative care physician Dr. Kerr and his research team from Hospice &amp; Palliative Care Buffalo have published studies and recorded over 1,500 end-of-life events.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"div-gpt-ad-theheartysoul_com-medrectangle-4-0\" class=\"ezoic-ad ezads-sticky-intradiv ezfound\" data-google-query-id=\"CIPKzOyuqI4DFXdGHQkdsSQwiQ\"><\/span>Kerr explains that patients often have dreams that help them make peace with their lives. This may inspire them to reconnect with loved ones, ask for forgiveness, or do other actions that help them feel at ease and more ready to say good-bye.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019ve all been harmed in one way or another for having lived, and we seem to get put back together through these experiences,<\/em>\u201d Kerr said.\u00a0<em>\u201cAnd so the life you live gets validated, and inversely, the fear of death seems to lessen.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, not all dreams and revelations are serene and comforting. Some can be extremely troubling.\u00a0<em>\u201cBut it\u2019s these dreams that are often the most transformational or meaningful<\/em>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-a-negative-end-of-life-experience\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Negative End-of-Life Experience<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/_n1cfht7WRhTERXJ7fYh8GHKTnQdxWnFuCXi3O8UB2omJFWK4TWrMmtrSlRGlIiSr7JX4DJLKvzbCrlnPFvc85e7T4hcy7y07Pd_t2TCaIaBr3LgbOh6PDRiDfE8fKkHS-bzxkq84l08PgoYdVDhtbk\" alt=\"A man sits in a cage, smoking\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo:\u00a0Erwi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>On the podcast Next Level Soul, Dr Christopher described an example of this phenomenon.\u00a0<em>\u201cWe had a guy in his 40s who had spent most of his life in prison. He had drug addictions, and he had head and neck cancer. He was dreaming, he was joking, he was very jovial\u2026 and then he starts crying because he\u2019s having these horrible dreams [that] he\u2019s being stabbed by all the people he\u2019s hurt\u2026 and he breaks down.<\/em>\u201c<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBut then when he comes out of it, he asked to see a daughter that he wants to express his love towards, and apologise. And after that he died peacefully.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-parental-reassurance\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Parental Reassurance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/KXpsAxAya5kTvf1B73SNHyu17dSGR4X3WoJovyiUzAdyQh7bPvrnh9R9dOmWirwjFCHOaomYLBUqxlxMNZDofqmsdyyFfJxyVV8cOj6CiLocHbejnb5UZxJgnv0I29loGZCrqY9l0ozSFeocmVhnKx8\" alt=\"a mother cuddles a newborn baby\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo:\u00a0Hollie Santos\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><span id=\"div-gpt-ad-theheartysoul_com-large-leaderboard-2-0\" class=\"ezoic-ad ezads-sticky-intradiv ezfound\" data-google-query-id=\"CJmbvOyuqI4DFblPpAQdDG883A\"><\/span>Another patient was a mother ridden with doubt and guilt since her children had to serve time in prison for drug-related crimes. But she had a very cathartic end-of-life dream, the doctor explains, where\u00a0<em>\u201cher parents came to her and told her what a good mother she was.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-end-of-life-revelation-for-a-veteran\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The End-of-Life Revelation for a Veteran<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/UxSo2fLj96x16PXoJHYo9jYT7ggu2IX2UjQif6f7jrJXrI6K5zlFWDJII4uEohtoZzgTES5EyvIQGD9TEsYV3ILOnxZHC_VX44mrfn1gQjTOWkchvBj8VU0MzRJZGvLrA2ewkp_tLyJD0WBP1d9aEHc\" alt=\"army men sit in a transport van\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo:\u00a0Diego Gonz\u00e1lez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>One patient was in the army as a teenager during the invasion of Normandy in 1944. He had suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) his entire life as a result.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>He came into our unit at the end of his life\u2026 he had such horrific experiences where he\u2019s seeing body parts and bloody water and screams, and he couldn\u2019t rest.<\/em>\u201d Kerr explains, \u201c<em>You can\u2019t die unless you can sleep. It\u2019s pretty hard to do because you just pass in sleep.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0But the man\u2019s PTSD was robbing him of any kind of peace.<\/p>\n<p>One day, he managed to sleep and Kerr asked him about his dreams. \u201c<em>He goes, \u2018I had a great dream, where I relived the best day of my life,\u2019 which was the day he got his discharge papers. And I had a really good dream, presumably in Normandy, and a soldier who he didn\u2019t know came up to him and said, \u2018No, we\u2019re going to come get you.&#8217;\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-post-traumatic-growth\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>\u201cPost-Traumatic Growth\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/XuwxI9O6sl9s2WeeJdg-2rvGaLIKOVu_M8yy3HZQn2Dntw8BOJOdTGk5bw1L3GUj5LEjGRGZLh6iQ_EU6_HKOxIjxaIcQgpP02dGKUTEMWS69UTwQhUU4qPWDpb7EAB1T5phjQZBCDw5XyNVenzTWuQ\" alt=\"person sits on a cliffside watching the sunset\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo:\u00a0Christopher Sardegna<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Soon after, the man passed away peacefully in his sleep. Dr. Kerr coined this sort of experience as<em>\u00a0\u201cpost-traumatic growth\u201d<\/em>\u00a0where people experience growth from traumatic experiences, and this can occur at any age, even those at the end of life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Just because you are dying doesn\u2019t mean you stop living,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said. \u201c<em>You do some intense living in that latter period.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-children-and-creativity\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Children and Creativity<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/ckmGlxUzhVH54aavwQcflCR3UXDA50os2UC_zwP9kpCSlIBRRxLSIQpZPieP-sTgrFCWmpMTh12oTPIG6vKeua8TxLoxKyjpeuRDWD8Kkv_hRoi5BdxuIRyGyvA5YsThPkcSx0bPHMkI_Xem8lneKhY\" alt=\"a little girl in a unicorn costume sits on grass\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo:\u00a0sydney Rae<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Children have unique end-of-life experiences, the doctor states, because they don\u2019t fully understand death\u2019s finality. They often see animals who reassure them that they are loved and make them feel less alone.\u00a0<em>\u201cChildren are creative and imaginative and can access that part of them,<\/em>\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>One young girl envisioned a scene of all of her favorite things. \u201c<em>She created a castle for herself\u2026 there was a swimming pool, the animals were returned, there\u2019s a piano, there was a window with warm light coming through.
