Some praised Allen for her openness in a world that still demands women justify their reproductive choices. Others called the comments \u201cirresponsible,\u201d accusing her of treating abortion like casual birth control.<\/p>\n<p>Allen anticipated some of the backlash in real time. Reflecting on one abortion in particular, she recalled how a man once paid for the procedure and how, at the time, she mistook it for a romantic gesture. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s generous or romantic,\u201d she said now. \u201cHe didn\u2019t even follow up with me afterwards.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-172809\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/07\/04102531\/Screenshot-2025-07-04-at-11.25.15.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"586\" height=\"870\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: @lilyallen \/ Instagram.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Her frustration wasn\u2019t just with men, though, it was with the broader cultural tendency to demand acceptable reasons for abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt actually irritates me,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve seen memes from pro-abortion accounts that say, \u2018My aunt had a kid with a disability\u2019 or \u2018She would have died if she went full term.\u2019 Like, shut up! Just: \u2018I don\u2019t want a f***ing baby right now.\u2019 That\u2019s reason enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While her tone (breezy, blunt, even a little giggly) rubbed some listeners the wrong way, others saw it as part of the point. Researcher Alison Wilson, writing in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/07\/02\/cant-judge-lily-allens-abortion-confession-pro-choice-23562712\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Metro<\/a>, put it plainly: \u201cImagine how much more palatable this would be if Allen had talked about how terrible she feels\u2026 how full of remorse she is? This is all to do with conditional acceptance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words: society wants women to be sorry. To be ashamed. And when they aren\u2019t, we panic.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson argues that Allen\u2019s candour, however uncomfortable, is essential. \u201cThat\u2019s what it means to be pro-choice: pro the choice of the pregnant person, not the choice that makes you most comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>So no, Allen isn\u2019t \u201cpromoting\u201d abortion. She\u2019s not campaigning for anyone to follow her lead. She\u2019s simply telling the truth about her own life, on her own terms.
