Her daughter was conceived from one of the 28 eggs Mintz froze over a decade ago. \u201cI just knew that I really wanted to be a mom,\u201d she told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/julie-mintz-welcomes-baby-14-years-after-freezing-eggs-10-rounds-ivf-exclusive-11763954\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PEOPLE<\/a>. \u201cAnd living in a big city, it\u2019s harder to meet a partner. I just thought it would be a really good insurance policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"google-auto-placed ap_container\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle adsbygoogle-noablate\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9841999341823196\" data-adsbygoogle-status=\"done\" data-ad-status=\"unfilled\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"aswift_2_host\"><\/div>\n<p><\/ins><\/div>\n<p>Initially, Mintz assumed she wouldn\u2019t need them. \u201cI thought, \u2018I am sure I\u2019ll never have to use them, hopefully,\u2019\u201d she recalls. But by 39, still single, she considered freezing more. Her doctor advised against it: \u201cYou are essentially guaranteed two biological children from those 28 present eggs.\u201d Having developed ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome previously, she decided against another round, something she now calls \u201cthe first error in my whole process.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"google-auto-placed ap_container\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle adsbygoogle-noablate\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9841999341823196\" data-adsbygoogle-status=\"done\" data-ad-status=\"unfilled\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"aswift_3_host\"><\/div>\n<p><\/ins><\/div>\n<p>She met her partner Stephen at 41 and tried to conceive naturally, but PCOS made it difficult. At 42, she decided to use her frozen eggs. But a year after blood and genetic testing, she learned that both she and Stephen were carriers of Wilson disease, a rare condition that gave any embryo a 25% chance of inheriting it, per\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/wilsons-disease\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353251\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mayo Clinic<\/a>. A custom genetic probe was required before they could move forward, which caused months of delays.<\/p>\n<div class=\"google-auto-placed ap_container\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle adsbygoogle-noablate\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9841999341823196\" data-adsbygoogle-status=\"done\" data-ad-status=\"unfilled\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"aswift_4_host\"><\/div>\n<p><\/ins><\/div>\n<p>At 44, her eggs were finally thawed, but none survived. Thankfully, she had insisted only half be thawed. \u201cAnd thank God because they ruined all of them on the first try,\u201d she says. A second attempt left just one viable egg.<\/p>\n<div class=\"google-auto-placed ap_container\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle adsbygoogle-noablate\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9841999341823196\" data-adsbygoogle-status=\"done\" data-ad-status=\"unfilled\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"aswift_5_host\"><\/div>\n<p><\/ins><\/div>\n<p>Determined to carry the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/pregnancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pregnancy<\/a>\u00a0herself, Mintz underwent surgery to remove a uterine polyp, only to wake up and learn the procedure had failed due to broken surgical scissors. At midnight, during rehearsals, her doctor called: she was pregnant. \u201cI threw my arms up in the air and then Moby threw his arms up\u2026 I think that he knew what it meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"google-auto-placed ap_container\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle adsbygoogle-noablate\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9841999341823196\" data-adsbygoogle-status=\"done\" data-ad-status=\"unfilled\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"aswift_6_host\"><\/div>\n<p><\/ins><\/div>\n<p>On May 18, Ophelia was born.
