The documents indicate:<\/p>\n<p>1)Roughly $232,000 of the total was billed in May alone, with attorneys charging an average of $516 an hour.<\/p>\n<p>2)The entire sum\u2014$430,000\u2014was covered by a transfer from Minnesota\u2019s general fund after the Legislative Advisory Commission signed off.<\/p>\n<p>3)Although the state attorney general\u2019s office initially offered advice, Walz staff said they needed specialized expertise in navigating congressional hearings.<\/p>\n<p>GOP lawmakers called the spending outrageous. Rep. Jim Nash argued the attorney general\u2019s team could have handled the preparation, while Rep. Harry Niska likened the outside help to pricey \u201cPR consulting,\u201d suggesting the governor\u2019s national ambitions\u2014rather than state business\u2014were the driving force.<\/p>\n<p>Walz\u2019s aides shot back, calling the GOP-led hearing a partisan \u201cpolitical stunt\u201d that forced the state to spend money on legal prep it otherwise wouldn\u2019t have needed. Walz himself later dismissed the proceedings as grandstanding that revealed nothing new.<\/p>\n<p>Minnesota isn\u2019t alone: earlier this year Boston Mayor Michelle Wu reportedly authorized up to $650,000 for similar help, and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston spent around $250,000.
