Their 2008 Honda Odyssey plunged into a raging river. When Matthew surfaced, he saw Malaya about 15 feet away, floating on her back in the current, still singing the hymn to stay calm. \u201cThat was the last we saw her,\u201d Matthew later recalled.<\/p>\n<p>He believed Malaya \u2014 the strongest swimmer among the children \u2014 would make it out. He turned his attention to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/viralstrange.com\/firefighters-rescue-8-puppies-from-drain-then-discover-theyre-not-dogs-at-all\/\">rescuing<\/a>\u00a0his wife and son, who had managed to cling to a tree. Malaya saw through it. She lived to harmonize with others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, Matthew and Liz are dedicating their lives to serving families who are hurting, just like theirs. \u201cWhen you lose someone that special, the only way to heal is to help others heal,\u201d Matthew said.<\/p>\n<p>Family friends have launched fundraisers on GoFundMe and GiveSendGo to help the Hammonds cover funeral costs and other expenses following the flood.<\/p>\n<p>Malaya was set to be a counselor at a Christian camp this summer, while her siblings were to attend as campers.
