It took more than 30 hours, but the surgeons did an incredible job and the young woman got a second chance in life. How Katie looks following the surgery is nothing but incredible<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to complain about the small things in our everyday lives. Maybe your morning coffee was a bit cold, the bus was running late, or that television show you watched last night wasn\u2019t as good as you had hoped it would be.<\/p>\n<p>Now, it\u2019s OK to get disgruntled about things \u2013 we all, after all, live different lives. At the same time, it\u2019s essential that once in a while, we stop for a second to appreciate what we have, even if we\u2019ve not yet achieved that dream scenarion we\u2019re maybe striving to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>From now on, whenever I feel like I don\u2019t have the energy to complete a small task \u2013 say doing the dishes or taking out the garbage \u2013 or feel like complaining about the little things in life, I\u2019ve resolved to think of Katie Stubblefield.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Katie Stubblefield<\/h2>\n<p>When she was just 18, Katie tried to take her own life by shooting herself in the face. Miraculously, she survived, but lost her face \u2013 and so was forced to undergo a face transplant.<\/p>\n<p>This is her inspiring story, which we\u2019d love for you to share with others!<\/p>\n<p>Katie Stubblefield had everything going for her. Her family had moved from Lakeland, Florida \u2013 where she had lived her whole life \u2013 to Owensboro, Kentucky while she was in her sophomore year at high school. Only a year later, the family moved again, that time to Oxford, Mississippi, and her parents began teaching at a local Christian school.<\/p>\n<p>Katie was \u201cfearless\u201d and \u201ca lot of fun,\u201d her older sister Olivia\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/magazine\/article\/face-transplant-katie-stubblefield-story-identity-surgery-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">recalled<\/a>. She had a great sense of humor and always helped people out. But Katie grew older, Olivia noticed that something changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wanted to be the best in all of these sports that she\u2019d never even tried before,\u201d Olivia said. \u201cShe wanted to be the best academically, she studied for hours, all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-chronic-gastrointestinal-troubles\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chronic gastrointestinal troubles<\/h2>\n<p>Katie went to the same school her parents taught at, and it wasn\u2019t long before the young girl found love in a classmate. The two soon began discussing the possibility of marriage \u2013 according to Katie\u2019s sister Olivia, their relationship was very serious.<\/p>\n<p>Yet during her senior year, Katie\u2019s life would change forever. At the time, she had already experienced chronic gastrointestinal troubles and surgery. In addition, she had had her appendix taken out a year earlier, which led to complications and the removal of her gallbladder.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the situation within the family setting was far from ideal. Katie\u2019s parents had both been fired from their jobs at the school.<\/p>\n<p>Heartbroken, Katie decided in that moment that she didn\u2019t want to live anymore. She drove to her brother\u2019s house, and was visibly agitated when she arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was like, \u2018What are you doing home from school?\u2019\u201d Robert Stubblefield explained. \u201cSo, you know, I called my parents, like, \u2018Hey, just so you know, she\u2019s at my house right now.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tried taking her own life<\/h2>\n<p>Katie\u2019s mother, Alesia, arrived at Robert\u2019s house planning to comfort her daughter. However, Katie said she didn\u2019t want to talk, and so Robert and Alesia went outside to discuss what had happened.<\/p>\n<p>Then, suddenly, they heard what sounded like a door slamming. Alesia and Robert ran inside to find the bathroom door shut and locked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to open the door,\u201d Alesia recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said, \u2018Katie?\u2019 And nothing. And then I said, \u2018Katie.\u2019 I said, \u2018Are you OK?\u2019 And about the third time I said, \u2018Katie,\u2019 that\u2019s when my heart began to just palpitate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt that point, I smelled gunpowder because it was, obviously, indoors, and you can smell it,\u201d her brother Robert added. \u201cAnd I knew exactly at that point what had happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Katie had shot herself in the face. Family and first responders initially feared the worst: that Kate was gone, or at the very least beyond saving. As it turned out, however, hope remained. Katie still had a pulse and, miraculously, she could still speak. The girl was rushed to the emergency room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen she was in that ER \u2026 she said, \u2018Tell my mom and dad I love her \u2014 love them. I\u2019m sorry,\u2019\u201d her father told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/youngest-us-face-transplant-recipient-shares-story-suicide\/story?id=58106138\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ABC<\/a>. \u201cIt took a lot of strength.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cI had no clue what a face transplant was\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Katie had lost parts of her forehead, nose, sinuses, and most of her mouth except the corners of her lips. The bones that made up the jaw and front of her face were also gone. Her eyes remained, though they were severely damaged.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors didn\u2019t know if Katie would make it, but began reconstructing her disfigured face. During the first night of her hospital stay, medical professionals told Katie\u2019s family that her best chance of living something close to a normal life was a face transplant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018This is the worst wound I\u2019ve ever seen, and I think the only thing that will give her any kind of life again will be a face transplant,\u2019\u201d Stubblefield said. \u201cThat was the first time we\u2019d ever heard that term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Katie doesn\u2019t remember anything from the day she lost her face. In fact, she said she doesn\u2019t remember much at all from that entire year. Like her family members, though, she was stunned by the fact that it was possible to get a face transplant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had no clue what a face transplant was,\u201d Katie said. \u201cWhen my parents helped explain everything to me, I was very excited to get a face again and to have function again.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-i-felt-so-guilty\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cI felt so guilty\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Her parents had to tell her what had happened, leaving Katie shocked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never thought of doing that ever before, and so on hearing about it, I just didn\u2019t know how to handle it,\u201d she recalled. \u201cI felt so guilty that I had put my family through such pain, I felt horrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Katie was hospitalized in Oxford, Mississippi, and then flown to a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Her recovery would take plenty of time, and she was placed on a waiting list for a donor.<\/p>\n<p>After a year, a donor was found. Adrea Schneider had passed away age 31, and her family agreed to donate. Katie was transferred to Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, where she would undergo her face transplantation.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.clevelandclinic.org\/2017\/07\/18\/cleveland-clinic-performs-third-face-transplant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">clinic<\/a>, Katie\u2019s procedure involved transplanting the scalp, forehead, upper and lower eyelids, eye sockets, nose, upper cheeks, upper jaw and half of lower jaw, upper teeth, lower teeth, partial facial nerves, muscles, and skin \u2013 effectively replacing her entire facial tissue.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">31-hour surgery<\/h2>\n<p>On May 4, 2017, 11 surgeons and several specialists \u2013 along with some help from virtual reality \u2013began the extensive surgery. It took 31 hours \u2013 but it was a huge success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo reach this point of recovery has often times been a difficult road to travel, but I\u2019m thankful there\u2019s been a road \u2013 and Cleveland Clinic has been the vehicle to help drive me along,\u201d Katie said shortly after the surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am forever grateful for the care this hospital has given me and continues to offer on my journey of recovery and healing. To call my surgeons, physicians, nurses and caregivers\u2019 world class\u2019 would be an understatement. And to my donor and her family \u2013 words cannot express the appreciation I have for this incredible gift. With a grateful heart, I say \u2018thank you\u2019 to all who have made this possible for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She attended physical therapy twice a week, worked with a personal trainer twice a week, and had occupational therapy once a week. Moreover, Katie had braille lessons twice or thrice a week and speech therapy four times a week.<\/p>\n<p>The speaking part was especially difficult for Katie. After the transplant she had the donor\u2019s mouth, and only her upper lounge and soft upper palate remained.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Katie Stubblefield after her face transplant<\/h2>\n<p>Her parents helped by interpreting what she was saying, but sometimes even they had trouble hearing her. She now had a strong, nasally voice because of her problems with the palate. Katie described her voice as \u201clike a frog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet even though she had many mountains to climb, Katie knew she was fortunate to be alive.<\/p>\n<p>Fourteen months after the face transplant, Katie\u2019s doctors had completed three major revision surgeries. These were also intended to slim her face, reduce scarring, and improve her eyelids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am able to touch my face now, and it feels amazing,\u201d Katie told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2018\/08\/14\/health\/face-transplant-suicide-attempt-natgeo-profile\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou take it for granted, the different components of our faces \u2013 the bone, the tissue, the muscle, everything \u2013 but when it\u2019s gone, you recognize the big need. Then when you receive a transplant, you\u2019re so thankful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Katie plans to attend college online with the aim of possibly pursuing a career in counseling and motivational speaking.
