The group had been sleeping on thin mattresses and hauled water in jugs from a store 15 miles away.<\/p>\n<p>Records show this was not the first time Rebekah tried to flee \u2013 she had previously jumped from a window in Phoenix and made multiple escape attempts after the move to Concho. The final attempt reportedly took place the same day she was rushed to the hospital.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-torture\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Torture\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Despite Rebekah\u2019s severe decline \u2013 becoming too weak to drink from a straw \u2013 Woods, who claimed to have a nursing background, told authorities she believed the child \u201cwould be fine\u201d and did not seek medical help.<\/p>\n<p>When questioned, both adults initially denied knowing the cause of Rebekah\u2019s physical condition, but doctors \u2013 one who described her treatment as \u201ctorture\u201d \u2013 found evidence of prolonged abuse, including brain hemorrhage, burn marks, missing toenails and hair, and numerous cuts and bruises.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-striking-admission\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Striking admission<\/h2>\n<p>Fox News reports that detectives described \u201chorrendous photos\u201d of Rebekah\u2019s injuries and noted that her father showed no visible emotion when confronted with the images.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fdamon.hawkins.397173%2Fposts%2Fpfbid026u7Uw32EDPsSBodyj8nT644xXNYGtqxmXu8nTLFTX4C3PeRSJfjQCh6dHC6nQL1Pl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"443\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter seeing these photos, I knew there would be no way a father would not notice the extensive injuries on his daughter, it would be impossible in my mind, for a father not to see these huge marks and bruises on his child,\u201d the officer wrote in the report.<\/p>\n<p>Later, Baptiste admitted to striking his daughter with a belt for running away but denied causing her head injuries. Investigators also found bloody clothing in the family\u2019s tent.<\/p>\n<p>Since, Baptiste and Woods have been arrested in connection with her death and both face first-degree murder, kidnapping, and three counts of child abuse \u2013 two of those charges tied to the alleged mistreatment of Rebekah\u2019s younger brothers, who are now in state custody.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-dcs-turned-a-blind-eye-to-it\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">DCS \u2018turned a blind eye to it\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cShe was black and blue from her head to toe. She had two black eyes, and they\u2019re thinking the cause of death was because of a hemorrhage,\u201d Rebekah\u2019s uncle, Damon Hawkins, told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.azfamily.com\/2025\/08\/05\/10-year-old-girl-murdered-northern-arizona-was-tortured-doctors-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Arizona Family<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hawkins, who said that several times he and his wife had called Department of Child Safety (DCS) for help, believes a broken child protection system played a role in her brutal death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe spent the last four days in the hospital by herself, and the only thing DCS can say is, \u2018I\u2019m sorry you weren\u2019t informed,\u2019\u201d Hawkins told reporters, per AZ Family, describing his devastation and frustration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe [Rebekah] was my biggest concern. The answer we always got was \u2018they\u2019re kids, they\u2019re in trouble. They\u2019re in trouble,\u2019\u201d Hawkins said, adding that the last time he saw the children, he could \u201csee the fear in their eyes when it was time to go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made it clear to the investigator and DCS that the system failed her. We have logs and logs of the times where, over the past years where they\u2019ve been contacted of the worry that we had. We got word of sexual abuse about a year and a half ago, and they [DCS] turned a blind eye to it.\u201d Hawkins lamented.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FEmpowerCollegePrep%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02ADkzCYNfrkzNVzFR7vkskkvtr2Y8XaHMEdkcnSGnL7k5PtPVrhrbmAqn6JdVM8j1l&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"367\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And he wasn\u2019t the only one who begged DCS for help.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-school-reported-concerns-to-dcs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">School reported concerns to DCS<\/h2>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/us-news\/girl-10-who-died-after-35694564\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Mirror<\/a>, staff at Empower College Prep, the school Rebekah attended, reported concerns about her and her brothers to Arizona\u2019s DCS 12 times between November 2023 and January 2025.<\/p>\n<p>However, a DCS spokesperson said the agency\u2019s records show only five calls from the school, and just one met the legal threshold to trigger an investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take every call to our hotline seriously, but we only have the authority to initiate an investigation if the call meets statutory report criteria,\u201d said DCS spokesperson Darren DaRonco.<\/p>\n<p>But, Brian Holman, Executive Director of Empower College Prep, said the school \u201ccannot explain why DCS is missing records of our calls\u201d and was never told that its complaints failed to meet the statutory threshold for abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Holman also said at least 20 additional reports about the family were made to DCS by outside agencies, the Mirror reports.<\/p>\n<p>The department has confirmed that a review team will now examine the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey didn\u2019t do enough to protect her,\u201d Hawkins said, per AZ Family. \u201cThey absolutely failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-chilling-911-call\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chilling 911 call<\/h2>\n<p>When Rebekah was found, starving and tortured, a 911 call offers a haunting glimpse into the last moments before emergency crews reached the dying child.<\/p>\n<p>On the recording, the caller\u2019s voice remains strikingly unemotional as she explains her version of what happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe ran away for the third time in a week in the desert, and when the neighbors found her in the wash, she was unresponsive completely,\u201d said a woman, who referred to Rebekah as her daughter, in the call made July 27, per\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox10phoenix.com\/news\/im-breathing-her-now-911-call-released-before-death-rebekah-baptiste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Fox<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe just ran away. This is like the third time now, and she still hasn\u2019t even, like, really bounced back from the first time,\u201d the woman said. \u201cBut when the neighbor found her, said that she was just almost gasping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She continued, \u201cBy the time she got back to the house, she was barely breathing, so I\u2019m breathing for her now. She\u2019s unresponsive, unconscious, and unable to breathe for herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked by the dispatcher if she knew CPR, the woman replied, \u201cYes, I do, unfortunately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ends with sirens in the background as paramedics approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t deserve any of this\u2026I will forever miss you my peanut and I am so so sorry I couldn\u2019t be there to protect you from those evil monsters,\u201d Hawkins writes to Rebekah in a Facebook post.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For many, the heartbreaking details of her final days raise urgent questions about how a vulnerable child slipped through so many cracks \u2013 and whether systemic change will come soon enough to save others.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Child uses watch to call 911.
