The term, blending \u201cphone\u201d and \u201csnubbing\u201d, was coined in 2012 as part of a \u201cStop Phubbing\u201d campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Psychologist Mary Alvord, co-author of\u00a0<a class=\"google-anno\" href=\"https:\/\/modishtips.com\/archives\/15968#\" data-google-vignette=\"false\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">\u00a0<span class=\"google-anno-t\">Conquer Negative Thinking for Teens<\/span><\/a>, told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/parental-phubbing-makes-kids-feel-ignored-5441938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Very Well Mind<\/a>\u00a0that children often interpret phubbing as rejection. \u201cHe or she may think they are insignificant,\u201d Alvord explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen children begin to think this way, they often isolate themselves. They will also overcompensate negatively or positively to get any type of attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For young children, those feelings can spiral into deeper emotional issues. Research shows that kids who feel ignored are more likely to experience symptoms of anxiety or depression.<\/p>\n<p>One study published in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8381469\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Library of Medicine<\/a>\u00a0found that higher levels of emotional neglect at home were linked to increased depressive symptoms at age 18. Conversely, strong social support from peers appeared to reduce those symptoms.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-169724 lazyautosizes lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/05\/14104435\/shutterstock_2229886135.jpg?resize=1000%2C563&amp;ssl=1\" sizes=\"auto, 789px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/05\/14104435\/shutterstock_2229886135.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/05\/14104435\/shutterstock_2229886135-768x432.jpg 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/05\/14104435\/shutterstock_2229886135.jpg?resize=1000%2C563&amp;ssl=1\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/05\/14104435\/shutterstock_2229886135.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/05\/14104435\/shutterstock_2229886135-768x432.jpg 768w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-eio-rwidth=\"1000\" data-eio-rheight=\"563\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>While\u00a0<a class=\"google-anno\" href=\"https:\/\/modishtips.com\/archives\/15968#\" data-google-vignette=\"false\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">\u00a0<span class=\"google-anno-t\">smartphones<\/span><\/a>\u00a0have become essential for daily life (serving as alarms, calendars, news sources, and social hubs) Alvord says parents need to recognise when their use is interfering with real-life interactions. \u201cParents rely on the convenience of smartphones\u2026 thus creating a sense of dependence,\u201d she said. \u201cWe often hear parents comment that they \u2018can\u2019t go anywhere\u2019 without their phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not just children who feel the effects. Studies suggest phubbing can damage all kinds of relationships, including romantic ones.<\/p>\n<p>A survey led by Faruk Caner Yam at Gaziosmanpa\u015fa University in Turkey found that partners who were often \u201cphubbed\u201d reported lower satisfaction and poorer perceived relationship quality. \u201cBeing too busy with smartphones during a romantic relationship harms satisfaction,\u201d Yam concluded. \u201cIt is very important to raise awareness of couples about\u00a0<a class=\"google-anno\" href=\"https:\/\/modishtips.com\/archives\/15968#\" data-google-vignette=\"false\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">\u00a0<span class=\"google-anno-t\">smartphone<\/span><\/a>\u00a0use during their relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"google-anno-skip google-anno-sc\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\" aria-label=\"Party food ideas\" data-google-vignette=\"false\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>In other words, the occasional glance at a notification is one thing, but repeatedly choosing your phone over the person in front of you could send a clear (and hurtful) message, whether it\u2019s to your partner, a friend, or your child.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scrolling through social media for \u201cjust a minute\u201d can easily turn into an hour, but experts are warning parents that their screen habits may be sending a damaging message to their children.
