The Canadian star, known for films like\u00a0<em>Dances With Wolves<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Green Mile<\/em>, passed away on September 1, 2025, after a long battle with declining health.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-d5c2b80caff0997fdbf9152fff659db6\" class=\"newsner-d5c2b80caff0997fdbf9152fff659db6 newsner-incide_content_once\">\n<div id=\"newsner-678571366\" class=\"newsner-incide_content_once\">\n<div id=\"taboola-mid-article-thumbnails\" class=\"trc_related_container tbl-trecs-container trc_spotlight_widget\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>At the time of his passing, Hilary Blackmore was by his side in a Toronto hospital. His representative told the New York Post that Greene was \u201cfinally free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond his legendary status as a Canadian actor, Graham Greene was deeply admired for the life he shared with his wife. Their marriage was officially registered at Toronto City Hall on December 20, 1990.<\/p>\n<p>But according to a 1991\u00a0<em>Toronto Star<\/em>\u00a0article, Greene and Hilary actually met in 1989 while working on the play\u00a0<em>Fire<\/em>\u00a0at the Passe Muraille Theatre in Toronto.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-386732345\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\">\n<div id=\"ad-modul_intext_175213_1\" class=\"ad-space\" data-google-query-id=\"CM_Qyd2suo8DFfxJ9ggdc9IKLg\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/125128856\/en_newsner_com\/modul_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-9f6cd0a121e05afa9a9038f7b6172c05\" class=\"newsner-9f6cd0a121e05afa9a9038f7b6172c05 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI dropped a wrench on her out of the grid to get her attention, so we could finally meet,\u201d Greene recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, the tall blonde woman with strawberry-blonde hair took notice of him. \u201cI don\u2019t know what she noticed me. I was in my biker mode, with Harley Davidson t-shirts and a bandana wrapped around my head.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-hilary-blackmore\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hilary Blackmore<\/h2>\n<p>Hilary had also worked as an actress, handled wardrobe and costume sewing for productions, and even sold shoes. But when Graham\u2019s career took off, she stepped back \u2014 a decision she said had been planned for some time.<\/p>\n<p>When Greene learned of his Oscar nomination for the role as Kevin Costner\u2019s native mentor, the medicine man Kicking Bird, Hilary was the first person he called to share the news.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called my wife, Hilary, and said, \u2018You won\u2019t believe this. I\u2019ve just been nominated for an Oscar,\u2019\u201d Greene recalled.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-175229\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/09\/02081625\/gram1-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"661\" height=\"661\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=3204448576476929&amp;set=pb.100007354547469.-2207520000&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Graham Greene \/ Facebook<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Two minutes later the phone started ringing and the rest was \u201dsort of a Christmas morning\u201d, Greene shared with The Gazette.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Graham Greene was a respected and acclaimed actor, he openly stated that he had no interest in moving south to California for roles.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he and his wife, Hilary Blackmore, chose to live outside Toronto with a \u201csmall army of cats.\u201d There, Greene enjoyed writing, building boats, and playing golf, saying, \u201cI just want to go and play, I don\u2019t care who\u2019s looking. It\u2019s a game where you get to play against yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-why-greene-moved-from-toronto\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Greene moved from Toronto<\/h2>\n<p>Initially, Greene lived in Toronto, but the city\u2019s chaos eventually wore him down. In an interview with\u00a0<em>The Toronto Star<\/em>, he recalled reaching his breaking point:<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-755921537\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\">\n<div id=\"ad-modul_intext_175213_2\" class=\"ad-space\" data-google-query-id=\"CPbLrd-suo8DFTdW9ggdOpYgsw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/125128856\/en_newsner_com\/modul_1__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-38b3595e67c5c5ab343566ca0eb5fb53\" class=\"newsner-38b3595e67c5c5ab343566ca0eb5fb53 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cOne day, I was sitting out back in swimming trunks dousing myself with a garden hose listening to the noise of the DVP,\u201d he said, referring to the expressway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHell with this,\u201d Greene thought, and called a realtor friend to say he wanted to move to the countryside.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after, the couple purchased an impressive log house about an hour north of Toronto in Udora. Conversely, in the summer, it keeps it nice and cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is so welcoming,\u201d says Hilary. \u201cIt is warm and energy-efficient. The wood stove and fireplace take care of business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Graham\u2019s retreat, the studio next to their home, wasn\u2019t exactly open to visitors \u2014 especially the ladies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bought a big-screen TV with surround sound,\u201d he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/life\/home-and-garden\/living-greene\/article_7749146f-fbfe-54ce-bd51-c575958a375d.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0back in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHilary didn\u2019t want it in the house. I call it Tubby\u2019s Club House: no girls allowed. Just Tully, the male cat, and me. He favored 18th-century reproductions in the style of George Hepplewhite and Richard Brinsley Sheridan, giving their home a vaguely Georgian feel, while she would have preferred a Mission-style aesthetic.<\/p>\n<p>Graham\u2019s wife could always be found in the loft, which featured two bedrooms and a bathroom. It was filled with her books, TV, and collection of films, offering plenty of space for her and the six rescue cats to relax and spend time together.<\/p>\n<p>It might sound like a dream life to many, but there were a few small tensions in Hilary and Graham\u2019s marriage.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-we-argue-about\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cWe argue about\u2026\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cAt Christmas, we have a 16-foot tree,\u201d Hilary noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd an accompanying Featherlight ladder,\u201d added Graham.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe argue about decorating the tree every year,\u201d Hilary admitted. \u201cOne year I do it, one year he does it.
