Now, Gary has revealed to his fans the secret behind the wonderful and long-lasting marriage.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gary Sinise has had a career unlike many others. It\u2019s quite common that actors and actresses have their big breakthrough role at an early age, but here\u2019s why Sinise\u2019s career has been different right from the beginning.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gary Sinise<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019re not saying that the now 65-year-old\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/celebrity\/john-travoltas-daughter-ella-shares-tribute-on-his-first-birthday-since-wife-kellys-passing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">actor<\/a>\u00a0didn\u2019t have a successful career in his youth. However, he had to wait until he starred in the classic 1994 film\u00a0<em>Forrest Gump<\/em>\u00a0for his big breakthrough role.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73279\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/03\/05210924\/garysinise.jpg\" alt=\"Gary Sinise\" width=\"630\" height=\"337\" \/><figcaption>Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Acting has always been Gary Sinise\u2019s main occupation, but he\u2019s made sure to make the most of his life, both by being a wonderful father and husband, and by helping veterans.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fell in love with theater<\/h2>\n<p>It reportedly all started in high school, when Gary got hooked on acting.<\/p>\n<p>Born March 17,\u00a01955\u00a0in\u00a0Blue Island, Illinois, Gary grew up in Highland Park. He was kind of a rebel in high school, and played in bands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, my dad was working all the time,\u201d Sinise told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abilitymagazine.com\/gary-sinise-grateful-american-a-journey-from-self-to-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ability Magazine<\/a>. \u201cMy mom had her hands full. I was kind of free to do what I wanted. And I wasn\u2019t good in school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gary got his first guitar in fourth grade and played through school. He started playing in several bands as a kid, and continued to do so into his early twenties.<\/p>\n<p>However, while he was studying in high school, something else came up. Gary Sinise was bit by the theater bug, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was playing in bands, doing plays, and started a theater company after high school, but I kept playing as a way to make a living while doing the theater until I was 22,\u201d he said. \u201cThen, the theater just took over everything, and all I did was focus on building our theater company.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73276\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/03\/05210925\/garysinise3.jpg\" alt=\"Gary Sinise\" width=\"630\" height=\"337\" \/><figcaption>Youtube\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8NFE-P_0cpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">sola174<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As mentioned earlier, Gary Sinise didn\u2019t have his breakthrough at an early age. In fact, he didn\u2019t start acting until later on, but rather spent most of his time\u00a0<em>behind<\/em>\u00a0the camera instead.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gary Sinise \u2013 work as director<\/h2>\n<p>In high school, Gary tried out for\u00a0<em>West Side Story<\/em>\u00a0as a lark. By closing night, he knew he wanted to perform for the rest of his life. He credits his love for the profession to his drama teacher, Barbara Pattersson.<\/p>\n<p>In 1974, by the age of 21, he, together with friends Terry Kinney and Jeff Perry, decided to found the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. They started of by performing in a church basement, but as the business grew, they gained more and more influence in the Chicago area.<\/p>\n<p>In 1981, he took over as the artistic director. Gary wanted the company to move their plays to New York City in order to branch out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was challenging at the time, not everybody agreed with that,\u201d Sinise\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.wttw.com\/2019\/02\/21\/gary-sinise-discusses-new-book-supporting-veterans-and-early-steppenwolf-days\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">explained<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were trying to open a new theater at the same time here in Chicago, so there was some disagreement back then about how we should do that and whether we should do it at all. I thought it would be good and we just pushed for it. It included Sam Shepherd\u2019s\u00a0<em>True West<\/em>, with which Steppenwolf Theatre Company made their off-Broadway debut, starring both Gary and John Malkovich.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gary Sinise \u2013 Forrest Gump<\/h2>\n<p>In 1990, Steppenwolf made their Broadway debut at the Cort Theatre with\u00a0<em>The Grapes of Wrath<\/em>. At this time, Gary was also making his move towards the Hollywood stage, directing two episodes of the television series\u00a0<em>Crime Story<\/em>, as well as\u00a0<em>Miles from Home<\/em>, starring Richard Gere.<\/p>\n<p>Up to this point, Gary had been on the other side on the camera. But in 1992, he made his debut as an actor, starring in the World War II film\u00a0<em>A Midnight Clear<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1994, Gary Sinise would become known to the entire world. He hadn\u2019t been in the public eye despite his many successes as a director, but now, he got his big breakthrough.<\/p>\n<p>Sinise was cast and starred in the blockbuster miniseries\u00a0<em>The Stand<\/em>\u00a0as Stu Redman. The same year, he got the role of Lt. Dan in\u00a0<em>Forrest Gump<\/em>, starring alongside Tom Hanks.<\/p>\n<p>His performance as the disabled and emotionally tortured veteran got Gary Sinise the recognition he much deserved. He received many awards, as well as being nominated for both a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture and even an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73281\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/03\/05210923\/ltdan1.jpg\" alt=\"Forrest Gump\" width=\"630\" height=\"337\" \/><figcaption>Youtube\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Eobm6s5ASVE&amp;t=89s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">vejai<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From being a young theater lover in Chicago, Sinise\u2019s life had changed forever, but he didn\u2019t know it yet.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dedicated to help veterans<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t know that the movie would be as big a hit as it was. I knew I very much wanted to play that part, I had Vietnam veterans in my family. I had supported Vietnam veterans in the \u201980s, \u201970s and \u201980s, trying to help them in various ways in Chicago,\u201d Sinise said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then along comes this opportunity very early in my movie career\u2014I\u2019d only done a few things\u2014to audition to play a wounded Vietnam veteran. I very much wanted to do it, I was lucky to get the part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gary had always wanted to help veterans, and since he had some veterans in his own\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/celebrity\/larry-king-will-death-estate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">family<\/a>, getting the chance of playing one in\u00a0<em>Forrest Gump<\/em>\u00a0was an honor. His grandfather served in World War I, his uncles in World War II, and his father served in Korea.<\/p>\n<p>However, since Gary himself wasn\u2019t that old at the time, they never really talked about the experiences his elder family members had been through during the wars.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t unique to Gary and his family. Lt Dan in\u00a0<em>Forrest Gump<\/em>\u00a0helped many other veteran families, as well as the community, he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey recognize some of the things Lieutenant Dan goes through\u00a0\u2014\u00a0some of the understandable confusion, despair, anger, frustration, and loneliness\u00a0\u2014\u00a0as an isolated Vietnam veteran,\u201d Sinise told the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moaa.org\/content\/publications-and-media\/news-articles\/2019-news-articles\/qa-gary-sinise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a0Military Officers Association of America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut also \u2026 Lieutenant Dan is okay at the end of the film. We hadn\u2019t seen that kind of story about a Vietnam veteran before. If you look back at movies on the Vietnam experience, you always had a question as to whether the veteran was going to be okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Formed the \u201cLt. Dan Band\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Gary Sinise has always tried to help veterans in any way he can. He tried supporting them by doing theater work back in the 1970s and 1980s, and when\u00a0<em>Forrest Gump<\/em>\u00a0became a huge success, it opened another door.<\/p>\n<p>Later on, Sinise formed the \u201cLt. Dan Band\u201d, and performed for troops both in the U.S and overseas. Now, he\u2019s also created the \u201cGary Sinise Foundation\u201d, which helps support military in several ways, including building homes for injured veterans. So far, they\u2019ve built more than 80 homes and more are scheduled to be constructed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just tried to share what I\u2019ve experienced,\u201d Sinise\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moaa.org\/content\/publications-and-media\/news-articles\/2019-news-articles\/qa-gary-sinise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">explained<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly, the events of Sept. 11 were a terrible catalyst to drive me into a service life \u2014 more than I ever would have expected. It\u2019s the journey from this sort of singular focus on acting and myself to trying to do more for others. He also got the leading role in\u00a0<em>CSI:NY.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gary Sinise \u2013 family<\/h2>\n<p>However, he\u2019s always made sure to help others while he was moving up the celebrity ladder. Most dear to him is, of course, his family.<\/p>\n<p>Many times in Hollywood, one reads about celebrities getting married and splitting up just a year or two later. But in Gary Sinise\u2019s case, that is not the reality.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s been married to wife Moira<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Harris for 40 years. The couple met long before Gary became famous. But just a few days before the wedding, the couple called it off.<\/p>\n<p>The cause? Both Gary and Moira felt they were too young to make such a long commitment. Fortunately, there was a ceremony a little later, and since then, the couple has been together. But the first time he was going to meet his parents-in-law, things didn\u2019t turn out that well.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Gary Sinise was working at the theater. One night, he was supposed to meet his future wife and her father at the distinguished men\u2019s Union League Club in New York.<\/p>\n<p>However, Gary was working at the theater the same night, and when he was done working, it was late and he had to rush to the club in his car. When he got there, he wasn\u2019t allowed in, because he was wearing torn jeans and a shirt; you needed a suit to get in.<\/p>\n<p>Gary started crying, explaining that he was meeting his girlfriend and her father inside, but they refused him entry.<\/p>\n<p>He pled to the people at the door to help him, and finally, they did. They handed him a suit coat and snuck him into the club through the service elevator. Finally, he met his father-in-law.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, after he had grown into a celebrity, he went back to the Club. This time, it was way different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m now in the movie business, successful,\u201d he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vAnX5KHxUL8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">said<\/a>. \u201cI show up in a suit, they put me in the presidential suite. I make a speech.
