The case of Chandler Crews, a Maryland woman who underwent limb lengthening surgery 15 years ago, proves just that.<\/p>\n<p>According to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-15036929\/Teen-controversial-surgery-grow-13-inches-reveals-looks-like-now.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u00a0the Daily Mail<\/a>, Crews was born with achondroplasia, a genetic condition that Johns Hopkins Medicine defines as slowing down bone growth in the cartilage of the growth plate.<\/p>\n<p>The defect itself is predominantly caused by a spontaneous mutation occurring in the developing embryo. It can be passed from parent to child, and often results in those who inherit the condition growing to an adult height of between 42 and 56 inches.<\/p>\n<p>Crews, now 31, stopped growing when she was 16. At the time she stood just 3\u201910\u201d tall, and said she found herself \u201cphysically struggling\u201d to complete everyday tasks like washing her hair, driving a car, and using public restrooms.<\/p>\n<p>That was until she underwent limb lengthening surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Having made the huge decision to lengthen her arms and legs in a bid to attain the \u201clife she wanted\u201d, Crews went under the knife in August, 2010, at the Rubin Institute Advanced Orthopedics.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-175589\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/09\/08073318\/Screenshot-2025-09-08-at-09.33.08.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"750\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/charmcitychandler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Credit: Instagram \/ charmcitychandler<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The surgery itself sees surgeons cut bone and use an external frame to slowly pull segments apart to simulate bone growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want to wait for the world to change to fit my needs,\u201d Crews told the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-15036929\/Teen-controversial-surgery-grow-13-inches-reveals-looks-like-now.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Daily Mail.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to take charge and change for myself and no one else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following her first surgery, Crews went on to undergo two more procedures. All told, the operations cost\u00a0her close to $2 million, though most of that sum was covered by insurance as they were deemed \u2018necessary\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>According to an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limblength.org\/patient-stories\/chandler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">interview<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/limblength.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Limblength.org<\/a>, Crews ultimately grew to an 4\u201911-3\/4\u201d, gaining over a foot in height.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt 4\u201911\u2019 I\u2019m still really short, but I\u2019m what I call (for myself) a \u2018comfortable short\u2019,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Being able to just walk up to someone and communicate with my face in the same range as their face has been the biggest game changer for me,\u201d Crews admitted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy treatment at RIAO didn\u2019t just change me physically, it changed everything for me.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chandler Grews underwent surgery as a teenager.
