A massive earthquake along a sleeping giant known as the Cascadia subduction zone \u2014 and rising sea levels might make things even worse.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-is-the-cascadia-subduction-zone\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the Cascadia subduction zone?<\/h2>\n<p>Stretching from Northern Vancouver Island to Cape Mendocino, California, this fault line has the potential to unleash an enormous quake, triggering not only land collapse but a catastrophic wave event capable of swallowing entire towns.<\/p>\n<p>A new study published in the\u00a0<em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/em>\u00a0breaks down the danger: researchers from Virginia Tech say a quake in this area could cause land to sink by up to 6\u00bd feet, dramatically expanding coastal floodplains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe expansion of the coastal floodplain following a Cascadia subduction zone earthquake has not been previously quantified,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.vt.edu\/articles\/2025\/03\/cascadia-subduction-zone-earthquake-flooding-expansion-tina-dura.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">explained<\/a>\u00a0Tina Dura, lead author of the study and assistant professor at Virginia Tech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impacts to land use could significantly increase the timeline to recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scary part? There\u2019s a 15% chance that this fault could unleash a magnitude 8.0 or greater earthquake within the next 50 years, experts say.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-why-this-could-be-devastating\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why this could be devastating<\/h2>\n<p>When huge chunks of the Earth\u2019s crust shift during an earthquake \u2014 or when a landslide or volcanic eruption occurs \u2014 the displaced ocean water can result in a mega tsunami. These waves are nothing like your typical beach swells. It\u2019s not super heavily populated, but most estuaries have a community in them, and they\u2019re all right in the zone of subsidence,\u201d Dura added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is honestly where I think the subsidence could have bigger impacts than it has during other recent large earthquakes around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-alaska-and-hawaii-in-the-danger-zone-too\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alaska and Hawaii in the danger zone too<\/h2>\n<p>Hawaii, on the other hand, has a dark history with mega tsunamis caused by collapsing volcanoes. Kilauea was actively erupting as recently as May 16, reminding everyone that the island\u2019s volcanic underbelly is very much alive.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-ring-of-fire-is-heating-up\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The ring of fire is heating up<\/h2>\n<p>All of this is part of what geologists call the \u201cRing of Fire\u201d \u2014 a massive zone around the Pacific Ocean where tectonic plates collide, triggering the world\u2019s strongest earthquakes and most explosive volcanic eruptions.<\/p>\n<p>The last time the Cascadia subduction zone really let loose? January 26, 1700. That means the region is long overdue for another major seismic event.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-can-you-do\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What can you do?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While you can\u2019t stop a tsunami, you\u00a0<em>can<\/em>\u00a0prepare. Know your local evacuation routes, stay informed on emergency alerts, and talk with your family about what to do if disaster strikes.
