He then\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/murder\/\">fatally<\/a>\u00a0stabbed her parents, Barbara, 50, and Clarence, 60.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving in a car he stole from a family member, Pittman \u2013 who reportedly threatened his wife with harming her loved ones \u2013 set the home on fire, and then the vehicle.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-evil-in-the-flesh\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Evil in the flesh\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cExcept for his ex, Pittman \u201cwiped out an entire family,\u201d prosecutor Hardy Pickard told jurors during the 1991 trial, according to archived reports in the Tampa Tribune, per\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/09\/17\/david-pittman-florida-execution\/86207205007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">USA Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, then a major in the patrol division who responded to the crime scene, said has never forgotten what he saw.<\/p>\n<p>According to USA Today, Judd described Pittman as \u201cevil in the flesh\u201d and said \u201cif ever there has\u00a0been anyone who deserved the death penalty, it\u2019s David Pittman.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-troubled-youth\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Troubled youth<\/h2>\n<p>During sentencing, Pittman\u2019s mother, Frances, testified that he didn\u2019t speak until he was four and spent his childhood struggling in school and unable to control his behavior, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/crime\/2025\/09\/12\/david-pittman-execution-polk-county-murders-disability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Tampa Bay Times<\/a> reports. She described a boy who was mocked by classmates, sent home his first day of first grade for disruption, and pushed through eight years of school despite earning failing grades.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-58f568e3a8ae79a6afbb9940fa39754b\" class=\"newsner-58f568e3a8ae79a6afbb9940fa39754b newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cTo put it simply, he was a child most women would not want to have to raise,\u201d his mother told the court during the sentencing hearing. \u201cHe was hyper. He just kept your nerves on tight all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite his mother\u2019s testimony, Pittman was sentenced to death on three counts of first-degree murder in 1991.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-intellectual-disabilities\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Intellectual disabilities<\/h2>\n<p>Over the next three decades, the killer\u2019s attorneys argued that he should be spared on the grounds of intellectual disability, citing childhood records of special education classes, a reported IQ of about 70, and signs of brain damage.<\/p>\n<p>As of June 2002 \u2013 years after Pittman\u2019s triple homicide \u2013 the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deathpenaltyinfo.org\/policy-issues\/policy\/united-states-supreme-court\/significant-supreme-court-opinions\/supreme-court-cases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Death Penalty Information Center<\/a>\u00a0states that federal case law forbids the execution of people with intellectual impairments.<\/p>\n<p>But in the early 1990s, courts did not consider intellectual disability a legal barrier to execution. State lawyers pushed back, arguing Pittman\u2019s claim of mental impairment was raised too late and could not be applied retroactively.<\/p>\n<p>Courts repeatedly sided with the state, most recently when the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Pittman\u2019s final appeal on Sept. 16, 2025.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-final-words\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final words<\/h2>\n<p>On Sept. 17, after his final meal of steak, chicken, and biscuits, Pittman, 63, was placed on the gurney to be executed by lethal injection at Florida State Prison,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/florida-record-execution-pittman-5df9174f84eda655d40e9a86a723e9b7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AP<\/a>\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n<p>As the curtain drew on his 34 years on death row, Pittman gave his last statement, surprisingly maintaining his innocence.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-e3bc5e3f277d39a394f90384ac9a45bd\" class=\"newsner-e3bc5e3f277d39a394f90384ac9a45bd newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI know you all came to watch an innocent man be murdered by the state of Florida. I am innocent. I didn\u2019t kill anybody. That\u2019s it,\u201d he said, according to Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019 spokesperson Alex Lanfranconi, per AP.<\/p>\n<p>Within minutes, Pittman took a few deep breaths and then slipped into stillness. He never changed. This evil man wiped out an entire family.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-record-executions-across-u-s\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Record executions across U.S.<\/h2>\n<p>Pittman\u2019s execution was the 12<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0in Florida this year, setting a new single-year record for the state, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deathpenaltyinfo.org\/facts-and-research\/data\/executions?page=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Execution Database<\/a>.
