They diagnosed her with psychosis, auditory hallucinations, and multiple psychiatric disorders \u2013 conditions deeply worsened by a lifetime of abuse, including repeated rapes and beatings inflicted by her mother and stepfather.<\/p>\n<p>But their testimonies failed to make an impact.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-executions-idUSKBN29I0GR\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Reuters<\/a>, Montgomery\u2019s lawyer, Kelley Henry, said the sentencing was \u201cvicious, unlawful, and unnecessary exercise of authoritarian power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one can credibly dispute Mrs. Montgomery\u2019s longstanding debilitating mental disease \u2013 diagnosed and treated for the first time by the Bureau of Prisons\u2019 own doctors,\u201d Henry said. \u201cOur Constitution forbids the execution of a person who is unable to rationally understand her execution.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-stuff-of-nightmares\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Stuff of nightmares\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately for accused, prosecutors dismissed the arguments as little more than an \u201cabuse excuse\u201d and delivered a scathing rebuttal that reinforced Montgomery\u2019s culpability.<\/p>\n<p>Nodaway County Sheriff Randy Strong described the crime scene as one of the most gruesome he and his team had ever encountered \u2013 so drenched in blood that the memory still haunts them years later. What haunts him even more is knowing that it was Stinnett\u2019s own mother who made the horrific discovery, walking into a nightmare no parent should ever face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people that are defending [Montgomery], I wish I could take them back in time, and put them in that room,\u201d Strong said, per\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-55587260\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">BBC<\/a>. \u201cAnd then go, \u2018Look at this body.\u2019 And then go, \u2018Stand there and listen to the 911 call of [Stinnett\u2019s mother]. This is the stuff of nightmares.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-death-sentence\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Death sentence<\/h2>\n<p>On October 26, 2007, the jury \u2013 that showed little sympathy \u2013 handed down a death sentence, sealing her fate in one of the most disturbing cases in modern American criminal history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t take long for the jury to decide her fate. The next day, Lisa was sentenced to die,\u201d Mattingly wrote. \u201cI screamed until I couldn\u2019t scream any more.
