It was uncomfortable, but not alarming. A doctor initially brushed it off and suggested physiotherapy. After a slip and fall, they believed she may have torn a ligament.<\/p>\n<p>But over the next decade, the lump didn\u2019t go away\u2014it grew. And every time she accidentally bumped it, the pain was sharp and unbearable. But instead of telling him about the lump, she kept it hidden\u2014out of embarrassment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">\n<div id=\"usaunfiltered24.com_responsive_2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI was ashamed of it,\u201d she admitted while talking to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-3691696\/Woman-hid-golf-ball-sized-lump-foot-DECADE-needed-leg-amputated-doctors-cancer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Daily Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That shame held her back from getting help.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-11\">\n<div id=\"usaunfiltered24.com_responsive_3\" data-google-query-id=\"CMu7t62L7Y8DFRHBuwgdLRQgfg\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/23293390090\/usaunfiltered24.com\/usaunfiltered24.com_responsive_3_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-he-could-tell-it-was-more-serious\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201dHe could tell it was more serious\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until they moved in together that David finally saw the bulge and confronted her.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-12\">\n<div id=\"usaunfiltered24.com_responsive_3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cDavid asked me what was wrong with my foot. I replied that it was torn ligaments, but he could tell it wasn\u2019t, that it was more serious,\u201d Cheryl recalled.<\/p>\n<p>He urged her to go back to the doctor. That decision may have saved her life.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-diagnosis-changed-everything\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The diagnosis changed everything<\/h2>\n<p>Her doctor quickly scheduled an MRI, X-ray, and biopsies. The results were devastating.<\/p>\n<p>The lump was cancer \u2014 a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.stories.newsner.com\/news\/after-a-few-months-of-dating-girlfriend-makes-a-horrifying-discovery-that-saves-her-boyfriends-life\/\">sarcoma<\/a>. And it was aggressive.<\/p>\n<p>Her surgeon delivered the grim news: To stop the cancer from spreading, they needed to amputate Cheryl\u2019s lower leg as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was hysterical. I was so stunned I couldn\u2019t speak,\u201d she said. \u201cI felt like I had been punched in the face twice on one day.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-life-altering-proposal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Life-altering proposal<\/h2>\n<p>Throughout the ordeal, David stood firmly by her side. Incredibly, just weeks before her amputation, he proposed.<\/p>\n<p>Cheryl credits him with giving her the strength to keep going.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe provided me motivation and the willpower to continue,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-is-sarcoma\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is sarcoma?<\/h2>\n<p>Sarcoma is a rare cancer that affects the body\u2019s connective tissues \u2014 things like muscles, tendons, fat, blood vessels, and nerves. It can strike anywhere, but most commonly starts in the arms or legs, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/17934-sarcoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors still don\u2019t fully understand what causes sarcomas, but they tend to appear more in adults, especially those who have undergone radiation or chemotherapy for other cancers. There are several types, including:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Osteosarcoma<\/strong>\u00a0(bone cancer)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chondrosarcoma<\/strong>\u00a0(cartilage cancer)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ewing\u2019s sarcoma<\/strong>\u00a0(originating in the bone marrow)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These cancers can be hard to detect at first, with symptoms that vary based on tumor location. She was lucky.
