According to court records, she even bragged afterward \u2014 showing classmates a fragment of Slemmer\u2019s skull she kept as a trophy.<\/p>\n<p>When a groundskeeper discovered Slemmer\u2019s body the next day, it was so badly beaten he first thought it belonged to an animal.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-showed-up-giggling-at-the-crime-scene\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Showed up giggling at the crime scene<\/h2>\n<p>The brutal murder drew massive media attention and became known as the \u201cJob Corps murder,\u201d since both the victim and the killer were enrolled in the program.<\/p>\n<p>Several hours after the body was discovered and the area taped off, Pike showed up again at the crime scene. She spoke with officers, asking if authorities had identified the victim and where Slemmer\u2019s body had been found. According to one officer, Pike seemed almost thrilled by the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was giggling and moving around,\u201d an officer testified during the trial.<\/p>\n<p>Pike was arrested the very next day.<\/p>\n<p>In March 1996, she was sentenced to death. The seven-man, five-woman jury found her guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. According to news reports at the time, she broke down in uncontrollable sobs when the sentence was handed down in court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I please hug my mom before I go. Please let me just hug my mom,\u201d Pike said, as her mother, Carissa Hansen, sat crying behind her in the courtroom.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-her-mother-s-tragic-confession\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Her mother\u2019s tragic confession<\/h2>\n<p>Hansen had testified earlier in the trial, admitting she had been a poor mother who allowed Pike to have a live-in boyfriend at just 14 years old. In an effort to bond with her daughter, she confessed she had even shared drugs with her and smoked marijuana together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should be the one in her seat,\u201d Hansen said. \u201cI should be punished for her crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christa Gail Pike\u2019s case is one of only 48 involving women currently on death row nationwide \u2014 compared to nearly 2,100 men.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1976, just 18 women have been executed in the U.S., making Pike\u2019s case extraordinarily rare.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1235933644\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\">\n<div id=\"ad-modul_intext_177427_2\" class=\"ad-space\" data-google-query-id=\"COGO182UkJADFTjSDQkdRXcf5A\">\n<h2 id=\"h-pike-s-words-from-behind-bars\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pike\u2019s words from behind bars<\/h2>\n<p>Now 49, Pike has spent most of her 30 years in prison in near-solitary confinement as Tennessee\u2019s only female death row inmate.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to The Tennessean, she admitted guilt but insisted she\u2019s not the same person she was at 18.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe id=\"instagram-embed-1\" class=\"instagram-media instagram-media-rendered\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B2dBUuYpXrw\/embed\/captioned\/?cr=1&amp;v=14&amp;wp=800&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fen.newsner.com&amp;rp=%2Fnews%2Fus-state-will-execute-a-woman-for-the-first-time-in-200-years-inside-her-chilling-crime%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwY2xjawNQ48JleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFyT1ljSkhGaDk4ZWFjdXQ5AR56YuB6aTafJ40qDr8Kk7dbS-diznTq1c07UtWL#%7B%22ci%22%3A1%2C%22os%22%3A1940.7000000178814%7D\" height=\"1130\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-instgrm-payload-id=\"instagram-media-payload-1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThink back to the worst mistake you made as a reckless teenager,\u201d Pike wrote. \u201cMine happened to be huge, unforgettable and ruined countless lives\u2026 It sickens me now to think that someone as loving and compassionate as myself had the ability to commit such a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her lawyers argue that today, given her youth and mental health diagnoses \u2014 including bipolar disorder and PTSD stemming from years of abuse \u2014 she never would have received a death sentence.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re pushing for life without parole instead.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-colleen-slemmer-s-family\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Colleen Slemmer\u2019s family<\/h2>\n<p>For Colleen Slemmer\u2019s family, there is no sympathy.
