Her mother, Lizette Farah, tucked her daughters into bed as usual in their apartment in Huixquilucan, Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>But the next morning, Paulette was gone. When her nanny came in to wake her, the little girl\u2019s bed was empty. Panic spread through the home as her mother and the staff searched every room before calling the police.<\/p>\n<p>There were no signs of a break-in or struggle \u2014 doors and windows were locked, and security cameras showed no one leaving with the child. Because Paulette had mobility and speech disabilities, the idea that she had wandered off on her own seemed impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Her disappearance was reported to the Mexican police and the search that followed was massive. Investigators and volunteers scoured neighborhoods, highways, and even nearby forests. She begged for Paulette\u2019s safe return, saying the child could be left in a public place with no consequences. Soon after, she launched her own campaign \u2014 printing flyers, putting up billboards, and paying for ads on buses and TV stations.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-suspicion-began-to-grow\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Suspicion began to grow<\/h2>\n<p>Her father, Mauricio Gebara, also made media appearances, urging for his little girl\u2019s return.<\/p>\n<p>But as the days passed, suspicion began to grow. A week after Paulette\u2019s disappearance, authorities announced that both parents, along with Paulette\u2019s two nannies, were being placed under a restriction order due to inconsistencies in their testimonies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach one of them at some point falsified their statements, which has made it difficult to uncover the truth,\u201d said then\u2013Attorney General Alberto Bazbaz.<\/p>\n<p>Paulette\u2019s parents were questioned for hours before being taken to a hotel under police supervision. That same day, investigators returned to the apartment, laying out blankets and preparing to reconstruct what had happened the night the little girl disappeared.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-squeezed-in-between-the-mattress-and-the-bed\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Squeezed in between the mattress and the bed<\/h2>\n<p>Nine days after Paulette\u2019s disappearance, investigators made a discovery so haunting it shocked the entire nation; she had been inside her own bedroom the whole time.<\/p>\n<p>Her small body was found squeezed in between the mattress and the bed frame, a spot no one had ever thought to check. Even more haunting, it was the very same bed where her mother had sat, giving multiple TV interviews pleading for her daughter\u2019s safe return.<\/p>\n<p>In a leaked video from the investigation, one voice can be heard saying, \u201cShe was severely beaten,\u201d while examining the stained sheets.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-384609105\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-bed856bb8aaf9886a2d756d423750fc8\" class=\"newsner-bed856bb8aaf9886a2d756d423750fc8 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>But that claim was quickly dismissed by Attorney General Alberto Bazbaz, who said Paulette\u2019s death was accidental \u2014 the result of \u201cmechanical asphyxia due to obstruction of the nasal cavities and thorax-abdominal compression.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-how-such-a-mistake-could-happen\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How such a mistake could happen<\/h2>\n<p>An autopsy later revealed that Paulette slept each night with an orthopedic cloth over her mouth to keep it closed.<\/p>\n<p>The report confirmed that her body hadn\u2019t been moved after death and that she\u2019d eaten about five hours before dying. There were signs of minor bruising on her elbow and knee, but no evidence of physical or sexual abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Toxicology tests also came back clean. No drugs or sedatives were found in her system. Authorities concluded that Paulette had accidentally slipped down into the narrow gap at the foot of her bed, where she suffocated.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-reddit wp-block-embed-reddit\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/r\/mystery\/comments\/1nasyne\/in_2010_4yearold_paulette_gebara_farah_went\/?embed=true&amp;ref_source=embed&amp;ref=share&amp;utm_medium=widgets&amp;utm_source=embedv2&amp;utm_term=23&amp;utm_name=post_embed&amp;embed_host_url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.newsner.com%2Fnews%2Fpaulette-gebara-farah-bed%2F\" width=\"640px\" height=\"675\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Her body went unnoticed for nine full days, even as police, family, and volunteers scoured the city for her.<\/p>\n<p>When asked how such a mistake could happen, the Attorney General admitted that investigators had focused their search efforts entirely outside the home, never imagining she was just a few feet away the whole time.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-recording-surfaces\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recording surfaces<\/h2>\n<p>During the investigation, a recording surfaced of Farah speaking with Lizette, in which Farah allegedly instructed her daughter not to reveal anything about Paulette\u2019s disappearance to avoid being blamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d[Lizette] asks, \u2018Why mom?\u2019 and [Farah] replies, \u2018Because otherwise they will blame us for stealing her or that you took her away to be stolen,\u2019\u201d the recording captured.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-2022734772\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-db9efb810efaf5a2ef5dbc000f852551\" class=\"newsner-db9efb810efaf5a2ef5dbc000f852551 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>Initially, Farah denied the claims, insisting the audio had been edited to make it seem like she was telling her daughter to hide information. She later admitted to having the conversation, clarifying, \u201dI had the conversation with my daughter, but not in the context they showed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Authorities maintained that Paulette had not been kidnapped and that her death was caused by asphyxiation after becoming trapped at the foot of her bed \u2014essentially ruling it an accident.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-nannies-testimony\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nannies testimony<\/h2>\n<p>Public opinion, however, was far from satisfied. For a long time, there were calls for a deeper investigation, as the idea that a child\u2019s body could lie in her own bed unnoticed seemed almost impossible to believe.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery also shocked Paulette\u2019s nannies, Ericka and Martha Casimiro. They insisted that the girl\u2019s body was not under her mattress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI looked in the bathroom, under the bed and in the closet. I saw that she was not there, and I also went into the bedroom of the parents to look for her, to the bedroom of the other girl [Paulette\u2019s older sister, Lizette], and from there we started looking for her again. And I went back to look for her in the bedroom,\u201d Martha said, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.univision.com\/noticias\/noticias-de-mexico\/paulette-no-estaba-debajo-de-la-cama-las-nanas-de-la-nina-contaron-su-version\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Univision Noticias.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201dIn fact, if it had been like that, I think we would have noticed, since thousands of people came to look for her, the bed was made, I never saw the mattress pulled back, I did not see a bundle or anything, it does not make sense to me that the body could have been there since Monday,\u201d Erika stated.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-who-do-they-want-to-protect\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201dWho do they want to protect?\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Jesus Ortega, leader of the opposition PRD party, also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/10168243\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">criticized<\/a>\u00a0the governor of Mexico State, Enrique Pe\u00f1a Nieto, for the mishandling of the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dAround 100 police went through this room of 10 metres\u2026 sniffer dogs searched it and they never found the body\u2026 who do they want to protect?\u201d Ortega questioned.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-2111917805\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-f1306b94ae5097594a31ba440b226932\" class=\"newsner-f1306b94ae5097594a31ba440b226932 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>He called for a full inquiry to uncover what had \u201dreally happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On April 6, Paulette was laid to rest at the Pante\u00f3n Franc\u00e9s de San Joaqu\u00edn in Mexico City.
