It doesn\u2019t necessarily mean anything is wrong or inappropriate. In fact, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/bizarre\/\">bizarre<\/a>\u00a0as it might look from the outside, the reasons behind it are rooted in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/health\/\">biology<\/a>, psychology, and plain old comfort.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-warm-and-cozy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warm and cozy<\/h2>\n<p>In a popular subreddit called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/AskMen\/comments\/1as86w\/why_do_my_guy_friends_always_stick_their_hands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ask Men<\/a>, one user asked why her male friends constantly had their hands in their pants, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/life-hacks\/\">responses<\/a>\u00a0came pouring in. One said it was \u201cwarm down there,\u201d while a second suggested it\u2019s \u201ccomforting to lightly massage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A third explained that \u201cit\u2019s cozy and makes them feel all safe.\u201d And another joked: \u201cThey\u2019re very insecure about their masculinity, so they need to reassure themselves that they still have a penis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few even admitted they barely even noticed they were doing it.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-calming\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Calming<\/h2>\n<p>Psychotherapist Lisa Spitz said the habit is often subconscious and often \u201cself-soothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say that some men touch their genitals mostly as an unconscious act of self-soothing, like checking themselves is an act of masculinity and making sure everything is in its place, a calming technique or even displacement of genitalia,\u201d she told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/uk\/body\/news\/a41623\/why-men-put-hands-down-trousers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Cosmopolitan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-178473\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/10\/17083436\/GettyImages-2165027811.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"664\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">American actor James Caan walks out of the bathroom with his hands down his pants in New York, New York, circa 1973. (Photo by Oscar Abolafia\/TPLP\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, Dr. Babak Ashrafi, a general practitioner with Superdrug Online Doctor and a specialist in sexual health, agreed that \u201csome men may engage in this behaviour absentmindedly or as a coping mechanism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRubbing certain parts of your body in a non-sexual way releases oxytocin, a calming hormone which reduces nerves,\u201d Dr Ashrafi told Cosmopolitan, before adding: \u201cJust don\u2019t do it during your work presentation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-adjustment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adjustment<\/h2>\n<p>Beyond psychology, the experts say that sometimes, it\u2019s about plain and simple adjustment.<\/p>\n<p>As Ashrafi explains, men might experience discomfort caused by friction or shifting in the genital area, especially if their underwear is too tight or bunches in awkward places.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMen may need to adjust their genitalia for comfort. This is a routine, physiological response to discomfort caused by friction or shifting of the genital area. Maybe their boxers are too tight, or they just need to readjust downstairs,\u201d the doctor said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-itchy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Itchy<\/h2>\n<p>Other times, there\u2019s a medical reason. Skin irritation, fungal infections, or general itching can cause men to unconsciously touch or scratch the area. While not exactly a polite dinner party move, it can be a quick fix for minor discomfort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedical conditions such as fungal infections or irritation can lead to itching or discomfort in the genital region. Men may put their hands down their pants to relieve this itching or discomfort,\u201d Ashrafi said.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, if the scratching seems excessive, it could be time to gently suggest a trip to the doctor.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-climate-control\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Climate control<\/h2>\n<p>Temperature regulation is another surprisingly valid reason.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ashrafi explains that the genital area is extremely sensitive to temperature shifts, and men may instinctively use their hands to warm things up or cool things down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe genital area is sensitive to temperature changes, and men may adjust their hands or genitals to regulate temperature. This could be due to feeling too hot or too cold in that area, which in turn can cause further discomfort,\u201d the doctor shared.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-self-protection\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Self-protection<\/h2>\n<p>But according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/trending-news\/a19547598\/why-men-put-hands-down-their-pants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Men\u2019s Health<\/a>, there\u2019s another possible reason: self-protection.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa Van Edwards, body language expert and author of \u201cHuman Lie Detection\u201d and \u201cBody Language 101\u201d told the outlet that guys may do it instinctively as a way to shield their most vulnerable parts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could think of the hand there like insurance against a friend who might give them a nut jab or a kid who accidentally hits a ball at them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not paranoia \u2013 it\u2019s just being prepared.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, the next time you see a guy casually parked with one hand down his pants, don\u2019t be too quick to judge.
