Hurricane Raymond \u2014 a Category Four monster \u2014 changed course without warning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d sailed through gales and storms before, but never a hurricane,\u201d Tami later told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stylist.co.uk\/long-reads\/shipwreck-beach-sea-boats-sailing-weather-hurricane-disaster-fiance-relationship-love-adrift-film\/239602\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Stylist<\/a>. \u201cWe had tried to escape it for three days, but the boat could only go 15 miles per hour. I was petrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-140-mile-per-hour-winds\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">140-mile-per-hour winds<\/h2>\n<p>She and Richard boarded up the yacht, donned their raincoats, and prepared to ride it out.But nothing could prepare them for what came next \u2014 140-mile-per-hour winds and 50-foot waves slamming into the small vessel like wrecking balls.<\/p>\n<p>Sharp insisted that Tami, then 23, stay below deck. He clipped himself into the safety harness and shouted that he\u2019d handle the storm.<\/p>\n<p>Moments later, Tami heard his final words:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh my God!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boat capsized. The impact hurled her into the cabin wall \u2014 and the world went black. When she opened her eyes again, Tami was surrounded by destruction.<\/p>\n<p>The 44-foot yacht was half-submerged, debris floated around her, and seawater sloshed against her body. Richard was gone.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-unconscious-for-27-hours\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unconscious for 27 hours<\/h2>\n<p>She had been unconscious for 27 hours. When she finally woke, the storm had passed, but her nightmare had only begun.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Hazana<\/em>\u00a0was broken. The masts were gone, the sails were shredded, and the radio and navigation system were dead. The cabin was filling with seawater.<\/p>\n<p>And Richard\u2019s safety harness \u2014 the one that should have kept him tethered \u2014 dangled uselessly in the waves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was just a mess,\u201d Tami said later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a major head injury and had lost so much blood. After screaming and being in so much shock, I lost all my energy, and ended up in the fetal position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But even through the grief and confusion, survival instinct took over.<\/p>\n<p>Tami began pumping water out of the cabin. With a broken pole and a storm jib, she built a makeshift sail. Her only tools were a watch and a sextant \u2014 the same ancient navigation device sailors had used for centuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dAll the electronics on the boat were fired. I had no way to cook. The stove was smashed and the propane went over,\u201d Tami told Hawaii-Tribune Herald.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-lived-on-canned-fruit-salad-and-sardines\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lived on canned fruit salad and sardines<\/h2>\n<p>It soon became clear to Tami that no one was coming to rescue her.<\/p>\n<p>If she wanted to survive, she would have to save herself.<\/p>\n<p>She plotted a course for Hilo, Hawaii \u2014 1,500 miles away.<\/p>\n<p>For 41 days, Tami fought the Pacific Ocean alone.<\/p>\n<p>Her supplies were meager \u2014 canned fruit salad and sardines \u2014 and her heart was shattered. But she pushed on, guided by the stars, the sun, and sheer willpower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t going to sit around and wait to be rescued,\u201d she said. \u201cI kept myself busy and distracted from the grief. It was good that I had the navigation to focus on; if I didn\u2019t constantly focus on steering, I wouldn\u2019t be going in the right direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At night, the ocean stretched endlessly, both beautiful and cruel. I think I lost about 40 pounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-spotted-her-battered-yacht\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spotted her battered yacht<\/h2>\n<p>Tami came close to being spotted and rescued several times. Two ships and a low-flying aircraft passed nearby \u2014 but no one saw her.<\/p>\n<p>On the forty-first day, the impossible happened \u2014 a Japanese research ship spotted her battered yacht just outside Hilo Harbor. Tami had done it.<\/p>\n<p>Against all odds, she had survived.<\/p>\n<p>Her story, one of love, loss, and raw human endurance, became a global inspiration.
