reason<\/em>\u00a0men cheat on their partners \u2014 and according to her, it has very little to do with sex itself.<\/p>\n<p>Juliet Rosenfeld, a UKCP-accredited psychoanalyst and published author, says her years of working with couples have helped her understand why infidelity happens more often than many might think.<\/p>\n<p>While people will always have their own opinions about what drives someone to be unfaithful, Juliet, who practices in London, says that after two decades of listening to countless clients, she\u2019s seen clear patterns that suggest a deeper emotional cause behind it all.<\/p>\n<p>In a column written for the\u00a0<em>Daily Mail<\/em>, she pointed out a 2018 YouGov study which revealed that around one in five people admitted to cheating on their partner.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Other studies have suggested that men have more affairs than women, but from my experience in the consulting room, I&#8217;m not sure that&#8217;s true,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0Juliet said.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;What I do believe is that men are unfaithful for different reasons from women.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"article_image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.tbdcdn.com\/uploads\/2025\/10\/15\/109054-thatviralfeed.com-large-608446.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"article_image_credits\"><span class=\"article_image_credits_caption\">A 2018 survey revealed that one in five people cheat on their partner<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Juliet explained that while every person\u2019s experience is different and no two relationships are the same, she\u2019s noticed one explanation that many of her male patients mention again and again.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;And, contrary to what most people think, it&#8217;s never just about sex \u2013 or, as my distressed patient claimed, &#8216;because they can&#8217;,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0the psychotherapist wrote.<\/p>\n<p>She also added that for anyone who\u2019s been deeply affected by a partner\u2019s infidelity, it\u2019s worth knowing that\u00a0<em>\u201cthe roots of infidelity are usually laid down decades before it happens\u201d<\/em>, often long before the relationship itself began.<\/p>\n<h3>The cost-of-living crisis<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Financial pressures, careers stalling or ending, and other typical events of middle age \u2013 like the nest emptying, or caring for elderly parents \u2013 can make a man long for change or distraction,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0she explained.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;In my experience, economics can play a big role in affairs.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>To escape depression<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Juliet believes that even when a man\u2019s depression isn\u2019t caused by his relationship, it\u2019s often something his partner can\u2019t fix for him, no matter how much support she tries to give.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She recalled one patient who described using infidelity as a way to escape emotional pain \u2014 a kind of self-prescribed relief to dull the ache of a lonely and difficult childhood that had haunted him throughout his life.<\/p>\n<h3>To feel accepted<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Juliet, many men who seek validation outside their relationships are actually repeating a deeper emotional pattern that started in childhood.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That early sense of not being fully accepted or valued can carry into adulthood and affect their romantic relationships too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;People who feel loved, seen and cared for do not have affairs,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"article_image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.tbdcdn.com\/uploads\/2025\/10\/15\/109054-thatviralfeed.com-large-608448.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"article_image_credits\"><span class=\"article_image_credits_caption\">The expert says men who have affairs have &#8216;different reasons from women&#8217;<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>To avoid suffering<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;For someone starved of affection and respect, a new relationship can emphasise the deficits of an unhappy one,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0the relationship expert noted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;This does not excuse infidelity, which is still an act of betrayal whatever the circumstances, but it can mean it has a less harmful outcome.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>To deny getting older<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Without wanting to sound like a clich\u00e9, Juliet said that many men turn to affairs with younger partners because they are struggling with feelings about aging, declining confidence, and a loss of physical attractiveness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For some, it becomes a way
