Presidents can only serve two terms, which rules both men out.<\/p>\n<p>Still, with Trump openly floating the idea of a third term and Obama remaining quiet on the matter, the hypothetical showdown has captured plenty of attention.<\/p>\n<p>In April, President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0was asked how he would feel about running against his predecessor in 2028. His response? Pure enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d love that. That would be a good one. I don\u2019t know. I never looked into it. They do say there\u2019s a way you can do it, but I don\u2019t know about that, but I have not looked into it. I want to do a fantastic job. We have four years\u2026 It\u2019s still close to four years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time Trump has hinted at testing the constitutional limits. Earlier this year, he told NBC News: \u201cA lot of people want me to do it. But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it\u2019s very early in the administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And with a grin, he added: \u201cI like working. I\u2019m not joking, but I\u2019m not\u2026 it is far too early to think about it. There are methods [through] which you could do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-hypothetical-numbers-are-in\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The hypothetical numbers are in<\/h2>\n<p>While the matchup may never happen in reality,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-14951431\/barack-obama-donald-trump-2028-president-poll.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Daily Mail and J.L. Partners<\/a>\u00a0decided to test the waters with American voters anyway. They surveyed 1,013 registered voters \u2014 and the results were striking.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>52% said they would choose Barack Obama<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>41% said they would back Donald Trump<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Breaking it down by demographics:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>73% of Hispanic voters<\/strong>\u00a0sided with Obama<\/li>\n<li><strong>68% of Black voters<\/strong>\u00a0preferred Obama as well<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Perhaps most notably,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/barack-obama\/\">Obama<\/a>\u00a0was the only recent Democratic figure to beat Trump in the hypothetical polling. When\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/hillary-clinton\/\">Hillary Clinton<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/kamala-harris\/\">Kamala Harris<\/a>\u00a0were included, Trump came out on top.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-obama-vs-trump-the-race-that-never-was\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Obama vs. Trump: The Race That Never Was<\/h2>\n<p>Obama first swept into the White House in 2008 and secured reelection in 2012. Trump followed with his surprise 2016 victory, lost in 2020, and returned to power in 2024 \u2014 making the two men the most dominant political forces of the past two decades.<\/p>\n<p>Yet despite their legacies being deeply intertwined, they\u2019ve never gone toe-to-toe at the ballot box. Until now, at least, in the world of \u201cwhat if\u201d polling.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-could-it-ever-really-happen\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Could it ever really happen?<\/h2>\n<p>Right now, the idea of Trump running in 2028 \u2014 or Obama coming out of political retirement \u2014 seems far-fetched. The law makes it nearly impossible, but Trump himself has teased the idea more than once.<\/p>\n<p>As he said: \u201cI\u2019m not joking\u2026 there are methods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Changing the Constitution would take approval from two-thirds of both the House and Senate, plus ratification from at least 38 state legislatures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unlikely? Absolutely. Impossible?
