Key requirements are that the request is voluntary and well-considered, and that the patient\u2019s suffering is unbearable and without prospect of improvement.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-2061550457\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-904645e055e47f227a077d7a3046b439\" class=\"newsner-904645e055e47f227a077d7a3046b439 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-i-can-t-do-this-anymore\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018I can\u2019t do this anymore\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Ter Beek, who lives in the small town of Oldenzaal, claims her psychiatrist advised her: \u201cthere\u2019s nothing more we can do for you. It\u2019s never gonna get any better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Suggesting there\u2019s no \u201cprospect of improvement\u201d, the woman told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/im-28-and-im-scheduled-to-die\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Free Press<\/a>\u00a0in that she scheduled a date with death in early May.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-145494\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/02\/20105617\/shutterstock_1164374962.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/02\/20105617\/shutterstock_1164374962.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/02\/20105617\/shutterstock_1164374962-768x432.jpg 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI was always very clear that if it doesn\u2019t get better. I can\u2019t do this anymore,\u201d she said in her interview, which ran April 1, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The procedure, she explains, will happen on the couch at home, with her boyfriend nearby and \u201cno music\u201d playing in the background.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cThe doctor really takes her time. It is not that they walk in and say, \u2018lay down please!\u2019 Most of the time it is first a cup of coffee to settle the nerves and create a soft atmosphere.\u201d Ter Beek continues, \u201cThen she asks if I am ready. I will take my place on the couch. She will once again ask if I am sure, and she will start up the procedure and wish me a good journey. We have not picked an urn yet, but that will be my new house!\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1472864106\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-9e92849fd18db30dbdfc286de9557880\" class=\"newsner-9e92849fd18db30dbdfc286de9557880 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>After, she says her unnamed boyfriend will scatter her ashes in \u201ca nice spot in the woods\u201d that the two chose earlier.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-death-now-a-default-option\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Death now a \u2018default option\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Ter Beek is one of many people across the world who\u2019s deciding to end a treatable pain with death.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-141773\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/12\/28092425\/shutterstock_2337918771-scaled.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/12\/28092425\/shutterstock_2337918771-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/12\/28092425\/shutterstock_2337918771-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/12\/28092425\/shutterstock_2337918771-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/12\/28092425\/shutterstock_2337918771-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1440\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Stef Groenewoud, a healthcare ethicist in the Netherlands, says professionals seem to give up easily on their patients now. \u201cI\u2019m seeing euthanasia as some sort of acceptable option brought to the table by physicians, by psychiatrists, when previously it was the ultimate last resort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She continues, \u201cI see the phenomenon especially in people with psychiatric diseases, and especially young people with psychiatric disorders, where the healthcare professional seems to give up on them more easily than before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Theo Boer, a healthcare ethics professor who served for a decade on a euthanasia review board in the Netherlands, says, \u201cI entered the review committee in 2005, and I was there until 2014,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/im-28-and-im-scheduled-to-die\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Boer said<\/a>, explaining he resigned. \u201cIn those years, I saw the Dutch euthanasia practice evolve from death being a last resort to death being a default option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boer suggests that people are being encouraged to \u201ckill themselves by laws that destigmatize suicide, a social media culture that glamorizes it, and radical right-to-die activists who insist we should be free to kill ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-it-s-not-normal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018It\u2019s not normal\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, the online community is expressing shock over ter Beek\u2019s decision to give up her gift of life. One woman writes, \u201cPlease get help. It\u2019s not normal for any human to want death.I too felt this way\u2026Friends who you can talk to are also very helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A second shares, \u201cThe psychiatrist who told her \u201cthere\u2019s nothing more we can do for you. It\u2019s never going to get any better.\u201d Should be criminally charged, or at least have their license to practice counseling revoked. What a monstrous thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1232681538\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-755afa510c5c4654ef79ae6c14e95259\" class=\"newsner-755afa510c5c4654ef79ae6c14e95259 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>Others shared their stories of struggling with depression: \u201cThat could have been me. I\u2019m thankful 25 years later I did not have that option. People didn\u2019t give up on me and I was given the proper help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for ter Beek, she admits she has a bit of fear: \u201cI\u2019m a little afraid of dying, because it\u2019s the ultimate unknown,\u201d she said. \u201cWe don\u2019t really know what\u2019s next \u2013 or is there nothing? That\u2019s the scary part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>As of December 2023, termination of life is currently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2023\/dec\/19\/assisted-dying-around-world-where-when-allowed-esther-rantzen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">allowed<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 with specific local regulations \u2013 in Canada, the Netherlands, Switzerland, 11 states in the U.S., Germany, Australia, Belgium, France and Japan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What are your thoughts on euthanasia or medically assisted death?
