It was a big moment for the family, and one Aleisha would never forget.<\/p>\n<p>During the trip, the high school sweethearts surprised their kids by announcing were getting married.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was in his [military uniform] and I just remember her being so happy,\u201d Aleisha told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/shawntae-brown-daughter-aleisha-murder-husband-joshua-exclusive-11842495\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">People<\/a>\u00a0of her mother that day.<\/p>\n<p>But before the celebration ended, Shawntae pulled her daughter aside to say something that would later echo painfully in her daughter\u2019s memory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was so weird because she told me this specifically by myself, she said: \u2018Even if, for whatever reason, even though me and your dad love each other very much, if we don\u2019t stay married or something happens, I will always love you guys and always choose you guys first.\u2019\u201d Aleisha remembered.<\/p>\n<p>That simple promise \u2013 one of a mother\u2019s unconditional love \u2013 would take on new meaning seven years later.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-more-angry-irritable-after-deployment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018More angry, irritable\u2019 after deployment<\/h2>\n<p>Over the years, happiness had given way to violence and fear. Joshua \u2013 who had returned home from deployment in Afghanistan in 2016 \u2013 had changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was definitely more aggressive, he was definitely more irritable, angry. And after that is when the abuse started getting bad, because I mean, it was never abuse before then,\u201d Aleisha told People. \u201cIt would always be verbal arguments up until about 2016, when the abuse started with my mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FOCSO911%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02sSxfhgEmPQTcYZVwTV85NUP726vJ2rtmUSbUd1A4CdWYxEUbeie5ANdWeTSBFtj1l&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"494\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Although Aleisha says her father never physically abused her or her siblings, life inside their home was far from safe or normal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was literally walking on eggshells. A constant hostile environment,\u201d she told People, describing a household ruled by fear and control.<\/p>\n<p>He also \u201cstarted getting more paranoid,\u201d Aleisha explained \u2013 paranoia that soon spiraled into full-blown surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s when he installed cameras in the house, so we were constantly under surveillance. He was listening to our conversations, watching us do everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And while Aleisha doesn\u2019t know the full extent of what her mother endured behind closed doors, she has no doubt it was even worse: \u201cI imagine the punishment was far worse for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it was far worse for Shawntae.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-no-longer-my-dad\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018No longer my dad\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>In late September 2020 \u2013 for almost two days \u2013 the kids \u2013 then 15, 14 and 7 \u2013 could hear the sounds of their father attacking their mother, who kept crying out, \u201cno!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe would have these, these episodes, and this was an episode,\u201d Aleisha, now 20, told People.<\/p>\n<p>According to Aleisha something always seemed to set him off. That day, the trigger was a curtain hanging in her brother\u2019s room \u2013 combined with Joshua\u2019s paranoid and baseless belief that his wife had appeared in pornographic videos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s when it clicked and he shut off completely, it\u2019s no longer my dad,\u201d Aleisha said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-ordered-kids-clean-blood\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ordered kids clean blood<\/h2>\n<p>After Shawntae was still after a days-long beating, Joshua allegedly demanded the children to clean up the blood.<\/p>\n<p>He then instructed his daughter call 911, insisting she lie about what had happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me to lie and tell them that she overdosed and took too many pills and came home and got f***ed up coming home. Not that he did it, not anything like that. Nothing to do with him having done anything,\u201d Aleisha said, per\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/aleisha-brown-shawntae-joshua-murder-mother-father-sentenced-11841439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">People<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-home-cameras-showed-beating\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Home cameras showed beating<\/h2>\n<p>Just before 2 a.m. on Sept. 30, 2020, Oklahoma County Sheriff\u2019s Office (OCSO) received a call from the Oklahoma City home where Aleisha and her younger siblings lived with their mom and dad.<\/p>\n<p>When deputies and paramedics arrived, they found blood smeared across floors and rugs, holes punched in the walls, and Shawntae\u2019s lifeless body on the ground. The 34-year-old mom had been dead for several hours,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/aleisha-brown-shawntae-joshua-murder-mother-father-sentenced-11841439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">People<\/a>\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n<p>According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/OCSO911\/posts\/pfbid02sKK9jKD3CeHZxZfLrq9DJLNnQWTX2tsd2wQeALsKwJntsRfMQJekDczr7WEZFHdpl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">OCSO<\/a>\u00a0news release, \u201cthere was enough evidence inside the home to take Mr. Brown into custody on complaints of 1st Degree Murder, and Domestic Violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fphoto.php%3Ffbid%3D582483311052300%26set%3Da.103314168969219%26type%3D3&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"498\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Investigators later wrote that \u201cthe victim\u2019s body was covered in bruises, contusions, and lacerations consistent with a severe beating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the affidavit, Joshua used a shoe, a belt, a semiautomatic weapon, and even a flagpole to assault Shawntae.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/okcfox.com\/news\/local\/oklahoma-man-enters-guilty-plea-agreement-for-wifes-murder-sentenced-to-life-in-prison-three-children-wife-killed-beat-strangle-violent-struggle-oklahoma-county-district-attorney-vicki-behenna-children-family-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Fox 24<\/a>\u00a0reports that video from inside the home \u2013 recorded by the cameras set up by Joshua \u2013 showed the man repeatedly beating and strangling his wife \u201cover the course of two days.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-shawntae-s-last-words\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shawntae\u2019s last words<\/h2>\n<p>In the hours before help arrived, Aleisha held her mother tightly as she took her last breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kind of feel selfish that I feel this way, but I\u2019m glad that she died in my arms. It\u2019s somewhat comforting to me,\u201d Aleisha says.<\/p>\n<p>And right before she died, Shawntae managed to whisper something to her oldest child \u2013 the same love she had promised years earlier at that Texas wedding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me she loved me,\u201d Aleisha said.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 29, 2025,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/local12.com\/news\/nation-world\/father-beat-mother-children-clean-up-mess-blood-forced-dad-mom-kids-child-kid-young-watched-gun-attack-attack-days-cleaned-teen-teeanger-dead-deceased-killed-kill-murder-murdered-admitted-confessed-plea-guilty-arrest-sentence-sentenced\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">WKRC<\/a>\u00a0reports that Joshua pleaded guilty to first-degree murder as part of a plea deal that spared him the death penalty.
