Andrea found herself unable to leave her bed, doomscrolling through social media and occasionally unfriending people who hadn\u2019t voted for the Democrat candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Then she saw it \u2014 a post from her husband celebrating Trump\u2019s win:<\/p>\n<p>\u201dGod Bless America. God bless #45, 47.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201dIt had a few likes, and a few commenters joined him in his celebration. He was downstairs in the kitchen making coffee, and I was upstairs avoiding him. I couldn\u2019t talk to him \u2014 or even look at him,\u201d Andrea\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/trump-voter-family-marriage-holidays_n_67321c1ce4b0231a203b1b80\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-thanksgiving-and-christmas-cancelled\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thanksgiving and Christmas\u2026 cancelled<\/h2>\n<p>Instead, she sent him a message:<\/p>\n<p>\u201dTake the post down out of respect for me and all my liberal writer friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But she didn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead to Thanksgiving and Christmas, she added:<\/p>\n<p>\u201dAlso, tell your family I love them, but I will not be coming for Thanksgiving, and I won\u2019t be hosting Christmas. I need space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"entered exited lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FAndreaTateMFA%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02AgnkKVorWibhs81gUr763SVVdBoRp2otRaUq1uxjJowbKy11p3AyxEDdZbo9RPXkl&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"497\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-rocket-lazyload=\"fitvidscompatible\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FAndreaTateMFA%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02AgnkKVorWibhs81gUr763SVVdBoRp2otRaUq1uxjJowbKy11p3AyxEDdZbo9RPXkl&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=500\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Later that day, after her husband tried to ease the tension with a coffee and reassurances, Andrea finally spoke to him:<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI am sorry about the holidays, but I cannot bite my tongue like I did with Hillary,\u201d she said. \u201dI don\u2019t want to disrespect your parents or your brother and his family in their home, or our home, so it\u2019s best this way. No scenes. You can go see them. Seriously \u2013 I will not be in a room of 15 people who voted for Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For many, this might seem extreme.<\/p>\n<p>But Andrea explains her stance as a moral boundary she couldn\u2019t cross.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI will not unwrap gifts given to me by people who voted for a party that has talked about building internment camps and mass deportation,\u201d she wrote. She added that she \u201dwill not pass the turkey\u201d to those who, in her view, supported taking away women\u2019s reproductive rights or harming vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-i-know-he-is-a-good-man\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cI know he is a good man..\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Andrea was surprised that her husband didn\u2019t argued about the change in holiday plans. Normally, it would have been a major point of contention given how close he was to his family.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere inside, he seemed to understand what the election outcome meant to her. She recognized his empathy and felt grateful for it.
