Try talking to a friend, or seeking help through counseling.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-patricia-krentcil-nbsp-tan-mom\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Patricia Krentcil\u00a0\u2013 \u2018Tan Mom\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>For Patricia Krentcil, her obsession took her to viral fame. When she was younger, she started to engage in tanning, and it quickly became a big part of her life.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, Patricia became a phenomenon on the internet after she stood trial for taking her daughter with her to the tanning salon. She was never convicted, but her name was now out there.<\/p>\n<p>Today, she takes a healthier approach to tanning, but her time in the tanning booth has greatly affected her life and appearance.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia\u2019s tanning obsession began when she was just 23 years old. The New Jersey woman was \u2013 according to the owner of City Tropics tanning salon in Nutley, New Jersey \u2013 averaging five visits a week for a maximum session of 12 minutes. In 2012, her face was all over the internet for a whole different reason.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2012, Krentcil faced criminal charges of child endangerment. As reported by CBS New York, police said she had put her 6-year-old daughter in a stand-up tanning booth, leaving the child with burns.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-charged-after-brining-daughter-tanning\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Charged after brining daughter tanning<\/h2>\n<p>Patricia, though, said it all was a big misunderstanding. She insisted she would never bring her daughter, Anna, to the salon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo not at all, not at all, not whatsoever,\u201d Krentcil said.<\/p>\n<p>But the Nutley Police Department arrested and charged Krentcil with child endangerment. Authorities alleged that she had taken Anna with her to the tanning salon, and that the child had suffered a slight burn.<\/p>\n<p>According to ABC, New Jersey law didn\u2019t permit anyone younger than 14 to use a tanning facility. Yes, she does go tanning with mommy, but not in the booth,\u201d she added. \u201cThe whole thing\u2019s preposterous!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At that point, Patricia got the nickname \u201cTan Mom\u201d in the media. The alleged incident went viral online, and Patricia\u2019s face was shown on news broadcasts and in newspapers all over the world.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-they-just-don-t-realize-just-how-much-color-they-have\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cThey just don\u2019t realize just how much color they have\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Not only that, but it shed light on the controversial phenomenon called tanorexia, a condition where a person becomes dependent and obsessed with tanning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you look at this, this is somebody who has a problem which most likely has a condition called tanerexia, where they just don\u2019t realize just how much color they have,\u201d New York dermatologist Doris Day told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/tanning-mom-jersey-woman-suffer-tanorexia\/story?id=16267543#.T6KIveuXTmM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ABC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s really no excuse to take a young child to a tanning salon,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe often consider going to a tanning salon the equivalent of smoking for the skin and the younger you start, those effects are cumulative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Health experts agreed that Patricia\u2019s case was very extreme. She may need help to treat not only the damage to her skin but also what is going on with her psychologically,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-tan-mom-faced-up-to-10-years-in-prison\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Tan Mom\u2019 faced up to 10 years in prison<\/h2>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/risk-factors\/tanning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Skin Care Foundation<\/a>, those who use indoor tanning equipment are four times more likely to develop melanoma. In addition, according to the foundation, sunbeds give off 12 to 15 times more UV radiation than the sun.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Zeichner said that Patricia suffers from body dysmorphic disorder, wherein one is constantly left unhappy with their own appearance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatients like this are constantly having elective cosmetic procedures \u2013 either surgeries, laser treatments or Botox and fillers,\u201d he explained. \u201cWhich also includes those who are addicted to tan skin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even though \u201cTan Mom\u201d was released on $25,000 bail, Patricia faced up to 10 years in prison if she was convicted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never went in,\u201d Patricia maintained of her daughter in 2012. \u201cIt was beautiful out, and they went into the kiddie pool. She\u2019s a redhead. Is there something wrong about getting your nails done or somebody who smokes too much or somebody who overeats?\u201d Krentcil asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this was such a problem, why wasn\u2019t this said years ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-cleared-of-charges-moved-to-florida\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cleared of charges \u2013 moved to Florida<\/h2>\n<p>In February 2013, Patricia was cleared of child endangerment. Prosecutors said that a grand jury refused to indict her.<\/p>\n<p>But though she was technically off the hook, mothers around the country continued to criticize her parenting. Patricia responded by calling them fat and ugly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s somebody out there for my whole life that doesn\u2019t like me because they are jealous, fat and they\u2019re ugly,\u201d the mom said, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2139148\/Patricia-Krencil-Tanning-mom-took-daughter-5-sun-booth-lashes-critics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the Daily Mail.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook in the mirror and look at yourself instead of looking at me. I\u2019m sorry I\u2019m tan. I like to be tan. It just feels good. But I really that think these moms \u2026 need to step off and step away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mother-of-five was a viral sensation, though her fame became a nightmare. Media and paparazzi followed her around, and she was mocked by Kim Kardashian and a sketch on\u00a0<em>Saturday Night Live.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, it became too much. The whole family relocated to Florida to be at her side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrently, she is still on life support (via the intubator) and in a medically induced sleep until her heart are lungs are strong enough to handle functioning on their own,\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Barta told US Weekly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fluid is draining from her lungs and she is improving today but she is definitely not out of the woods.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-this-is-tan-mom-today-pictures\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">This is \u2018Tan Mom\u2019 today \u2013 pictures<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThey are feeding her very strong antibiotics to kill the infection as well so her system is taking quite a hit. The current plan is to try to extubate and revive her tomorrow or Tuesday, provided she maintains this trajectory,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>It was later revealed that Patricia had suffered cardiac arrest, and was diagnosed with pneumonia, pancreatitis, and an infection that spread to her lungs.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, Patricia pulled through, and today she seems to be doing better than ever. Instead of trying to hide, she today embraces her \u201cTan Mom\u201d identity.<\/p>\n<p>She also said that she still tans twice a week in her own tanning bed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t bother me anymore.
