The only way to stop it is to\u00a0<strong>quit entirely<\/strong>, which can be difficult for habitual users. Scientists aren\u2019t sure why some people are affected and others aren\u2019t, but overstimulation of the\u00a0<strong>endocannabinoid system<\/strong>\u00a0is a leading theory. Even small amounts can trigger symptoms in vulnerable users.<\/p>\n<p>A George Washington University study of over 1,000 CHS patients found that\u00a0<strong>early and prolonged cannabis use strongly correlates with ER visits for scromiting<\/strong>. Alarmingly, adolescent cases in the U.S.\u00a0<strong>jumped more than tenfold between 2016 and 2023<\/strong>, especially in states where recreational cannabis remains illegal.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Official recognition<\/h3>\n<p>On October 1, 2025, the\u00a0<strong>World Health Organization formally recognized CHS<\/strong>, giving it an official diagnosis code.
