He said he died \u201cpeacefully.\u201d The singer-songwriter, a founding member of the Chicago band\u00a0<em>The Redwalls<\/em>, died on November 28.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJustin was an essential part of The Redwalls,\u201d the band wrote in an emotional statement on Tuesday. \u201cHis energy, intuition, and raw musicality helped shape who we were. Not just as a band, but as a group of kids trying to make something meaningful together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Justin Baren, a Chicago native, was inspired by the 1960s \u201cBritish Invasion\u201d bands, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Kinks. He and his older brother, Logan, formed their first band, The Pages, in 2001 while they were still in high school.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-teen-pop-star-justin-baren-dead-at-40\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teen pop star Justin Baren dead at 40<\/h2>\n<p>Their friends Andrew Langer and Jordan Kozer also joined the band. Two years later, in 2003, they rebranded as The Redwalls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a very early age, we knew the kids in high school weren\u2019t going to be our scene,\u201d Baren said in a 2005 interview, per the Chicago Sun-Times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to get into the real music scene and not be limited by what other kids were saying or doing. We wanted to be Downtown where it was happening,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Kozer left the band as he left for college. He said Justin and his brother were always destined to become musicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t know anything else, he didn\u2019t try anything else. Deerfield was pushing people to go to college,\u201d Kozer told the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/music\/2025\/12\/04\/justin-baren-obituary-redwalls-band-deerfield\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Chicago Sun-Times<\/a>. \u201cHe and Logan didn\u2019t care anything at all about that. They were laser-focused on making this happen. There was no backup plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Logan and his brother signed with Capitol Records \u2013 the same American label that represented The Beatles \u2013 before they had graduated from high school. They released their first major label record in 2005,\u00a0<em>De Nova<\/em>. The band grew popular and toured with English superstars Oasis in both Europe and the US.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis tone and groove were really solid. He was not an educated musician, but he grooved harder than any band I ever played with,\u201d their former band member said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-mourned-by-fans\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mourned by fans<\/h2>\n<p>After his passing, fans have flooded social media with tributes. The Redwalls posted the following statement on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our friend, brother, and bandmate, Justin Baren. Justin was an essential part of The Redwalls. His energy, intuition, and raw musicality helped shape who we were. Not just as a band, but as a group of kids trying to make something meaningful together. The cause of Justin\u2019s passing has not been officially determined. He will be deeply missed, and his memory will be a blessing. We\u2019re grateful for the years, the music, and all the memories we shared.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven 20+ years ago, he radiated energy, intuition, and raw musicality. He was a joy to watch,\u2019 one person wrote on The Redwalls\u2019 post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is like a knife cutting straight to the guts. So unbelievable. I still listen to their music from time to time and seeing the brothers together making new music was something exciting;\u201d another said.<\/p>\n<p>A third added, I\u2019ll never forget Justin as a gentle, kind, creative soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJustin and The Redwalls, after seeing them perform 20 years ago I felt like maybe rock wasn\u2019t dead after all\u2014what talents,\u201d a fourth commented.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rest in peace, Justin Baren.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former teen pop star has died.
